It's good for you!!!!

Fortunately I never picked up the smoking habit myself, but I know lots of people who have and struggled to quit. I don't have any personal suggestions, but I wanted to express support for those of you trying to kick the habit. Stick with it. You can do it!!!! Studies have shown that your lungs will start to heal once you quit, so it's never too late!

Oh goodness! I can tell that this is going to be a popular one also!! The two most popular New Year's resolutions, to lose weight and to stop smoking.

My husband and I are trying to quit also. We just started Monday and are both doing well during the day. Neither of us has smoked at all during the day. But........we are still smoking a little at night. Not nearly as much though! Where we were smoking about 1.5 to 2 packs a day between the two of us we are now smoking about 1/2 pack between the two of us. Of course this has been all in the evenings, but at least it's a cut down. We are going to try to cut down gradually then eventually stop all together. We figure that it will cut down on stress, grumpyness, etc.

Well, good luck everyone! Congrats to all who are doing well (or at least better) so far! Keep us posted, and I will do the same!

Vasha - Way to go!! I'm awfully proud of you for completely quitting!!

Kobesmom - Hey - I've been doing the same thing!! No smoking during the day, just a few at night! Breaking the habit has been the hardest thing for me!! But - I relapsed and have one or two during the day! Bummer!!

In October, we started NOT smoking in the house! Still get an earful from Scott everytime it's cold and he has to stand outside, but Apollo gets to go outside more often!! Then I bought a new vehicle and there is NO smoking allowed in it! On the six hour drive to visit my parents, I thought he was going to kill me, but we made it!!! Those were the two biggest habits to break. Now I'm working on social activities. I'm really bad if some friends are with us playing cards!! How can I not smoke and they can? Bars - oh boy! On breaks at work, I bum from my friend everyonce in a while! I haven't bought a pack in a long time (tend to smoke more then).

I really think we can all do this! It is hard - but so are a lot of things that we get through (can't think of any good ones right now  ) I am thinking about checking out that book mentioned above! I really want to quit smoking before the baby is born!! (I know I should quit now, but it's always easier said than done!)

I'm smoking a cig as I am writing this :o Only the 2nd one today so not too bad. OK I just put it out. We have to keep eachother accountable!

Anyway.....Yes, drinking and friends are defintely going to be a problem!! I can't have a beer without a cigarette!

I told my husband that we're just going to have to cut down on drinking until we are more stable with this. We are not alcoholics or anything (the first step is admitting it :p ) but we do like to have a few, a couple of times a week.

Some of our friends smoke and some don't, but we actually have a couple of friends that didn't smoke before they started hanging around us.

We don't smoke in the house either and haven't for years, but we have a room in the back of the house that we use. It's not heated or cooled so we keep the back door open and use an elec. heater when it's cold. The things that we will do to have that nicotine fix!! We do smoke in the cars. When I first got my car in 1995 we tried not to smoke in it, but that stopped when we drove to Indiana to see my in-laws. Knye2001 - I'm proud of you that you didn't give in on your trip!! appicon

We can do it!! We just have to put our minds to it and support eachother!!

After I posted, I met my friend upstairs and I had my first cig of the day! I do feel terrible (have a cold) for doing it, but it was hard to resist!! Oh-well. Only one so far today and I'm really going to work on it when I get home!

Darn - we can't all be perfect!!

Good Luck!!!

I'm sure you'll do just fine.
Just remember if you can get past the first two 3s (3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years) you'll be fine. They are the hardest.
I quit for a few months, but started again from stress. I found that the hardest times to not smoke was after a meal and in the car.
So, I would eat little meals all day so that I wouldn't get so full that I would crave a smoke. Then, I bought a new car, so I didn't want to somke in it.

Anyway-everytime you think of having a smoke take a quarter and put it in a jar. By the end of the month you might just have enough $ to go shopping!! :D

Best of luck to all of you trying to beat this awful habit. I quit March 13, 2000 after smoking for 17 years. I found out a month earlier that I was pregnant with my daughter and though I did not quit (but cut down) when I was pregnant with my son, I thought that this would be the time to make it final. I tried to gradually cut down for a month and it didn't work. I ran out of cigarettes when at work and I had no money on me. I would have had to go to the bank to take money out to buy them and I thought--this is ridiculous, taking money out of the bank. I didn't go to the bank that day and the rest is history.

The way I got through it was like this. Take it one minute at a time, then 10 minutes at a time, then a half hour at a time, then an hour, then a few hours, then a day, then a week, then a month, get the picture? When I got cravings, I would tell myself, 'I got through the last minute, I can make it one more minute.' And I would continue this until the craving went away. If you can go an hour without a cigarette, you can go the next hour without a cigarette. Set small goals, they are less difficult. Picture yourself 10 minutes from now or an hour from now rather than a year from now.

I still get cravings from certain triggers but they go away as quickly as they come. I still need a "fixation" when I do certain things. Like I need coffee or water when I drive. My mother quit after 40 years of smoking 2 packs a day. She's been smoke-free for over 10 years now and uses tic-tacs for her fixation. If she can do it, anyone can!!!

I give anyone who's tried and succeeded as well as anyone who's tried and not succeeded a lot of credit. I hope you all succeed.

I smoked for 8 years and quit cold turkey back in 1984. The first 3 days were the hardest. I tried to avoid things that made me want to smoke like drinking and dating ;) It was a New Year's resolution that I stuck to, and man is it ever great to follow through on one :)
