I started smoking when I was 13 and quit when I was 31. In the last ten years of it I would hide my habit from the world as best I could...I lied to my husband I lied to my children I lied to my family and the people I worked with. My whole life was geared around sneaking out for that one little smoke...which I managed to do at least 25 times a day.
Out of the blue I picked up a thin little paperback book at Chapters called "Easy Way to Quit Smoking" written by Allen Carr. Smokers....write that down.
In 3 days I was almost done the book and could not wait to be finished because I would get to become a non smoker at the end of it. Haven't looked back since. No pain no withdrawl no bitchies no weight gain no substitutions like the patch ...Nothing!
And no....the book didnt show all kinds of gross testimonials about how smoking kills. Smokers are smokers.....they are not stupid. They know how bad it is to their health. Allen Carr simply shows smokers that they are really not as addicted as badly as they think they are. He removes all the myths around smoking in a very gentle matter of fact way that uses plain common sense. One of the best things? I didnt become one of those nasty abrasive ex smokers who verbally abuses anyone still unfortunate enough to still be smoking.
As for withdrawl, I havent missed a cigarette since day one of becoming a non smoker. In the first couple days it would hit me to light a smoke because that was my habit. I compared it to a person who switches from driving standard to automatic: your left foot reaches for the clutch sometimes. That is not a serious condition requiring drugs and/or patches or gum whatever. It was just my brain remembering that this was a situation where I used to smoke. I have since gone through a marriage separation, lost my job, lost a family member to mental illness yada yada yada...all without once thinking i might need a smoke.
If you pick up the book, read it carefully with an open and hopeful mind. There are no tricks involved, but like anything, you can be skeptical about it. There are people that say "oh you have to really really want to quit to be able to do it without medical help"...that is a load of hooey. Smokers ALL want to quit.
Good luck to all who are going to quit: celebrate! It really is a new life!
