Got Pet Snakes

You have very cool web page. I did enjoy the picture of Emma, and that Ginger looks like a real sweetheart too. You said Emma is head shy, I had that problem with Gloria, but as time went on I as able to pet the top of her hear ever so gently. It's a very slow process, but with good results. She now allows me to tickle the top of her head. It puts her in a bit of a trance, but she loves it. Hope to hear more about Emma and Ginger too!

Got Pet Snakes

My Hot Rock in my tank got old and started to get to hot. I removed it and got a new one. For the safety of Monte. They tend to lay on the hot rock and if it is defective it can burn them. My other snake, Gloria has a waterbed heater under her tank that heats the whole tank evenly. I need to get a waterbed heater under Monte's tank and elimitnate the hot rock totally.

Garter, baby!

I've just gotten a garter snake baby recently. she's very small. Lucas gives her the most interesting looks. He hasn't quite figured her out yet.

My two year old son put her size in perspective as he watched me set up her tank the day we brought her home. After attentively watching all I did he finally piped up and asked, "is that for that little worm?"

Congradulations and welcome to the snake world. I think everbody starts with garter snakes. Then they move up to the larger snakes. Pretty soon you may get a Ball Python or something larger. Snakes are very interesting pets. As you learn more about them, you start to up grade to bigger more exotic species. Have fun with her.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in. My three year old begged and begged for a snake so we bought her a ball python. She picked it out herself from a box of wriggling hatchlings and named him Oswald. I must say for being only three my daughter does a lot with him. I take her to the pet store to buy mice, she carries them home and helps feed Oswald, she handles him at least once or twice a week and helps clean his cage. I grew up with snakes, all kinds!! and love seeing my daughter become a budding herpotologist. To think I didn't even set her up to it!! My daughter does not understand though why most of her friends (and ours too) are scared of Oswald. She says, "All he does is snuggle you!!"

Hi daisy_lucy, I think it's great that your three year old daughter is interested in her pet snake. I have the same problem with my adult friends. I don't understand why they are scared of my Monte and Gloria also. All they want to do is to be, held and snuggled too. Hope to hear more of Oswald as he grows with your daughterwormicon

Well after 8 years of owning and feeding snakes, I finally got bit by a feeder rat. When you feed live bait to snakes, the snake needs to attack the bait within 15 to 20 minutes. If they don't eat the bait in that time, it's not hungry. You have to take the rat away or the rat will start to naw on the snake. They can do damage to the snake, or the snake might get an infection. I get feeder rats from my local pet store, so they are pretty mellow. You can handle them pretty easily. I always wear a rawhide glove when handling rats, in case they do bite. This time I was taking the rat out of the snake tank and was going to put the rat in my 10 gallon rat holding tank. I had my rawhide glove on, but the little guy jumped up and bit me on the wrist. So I had to clean the wound and go to the clinic and get a tetna shot, which cost a $157.00 dollars. That was one very expensive dinner for my pet snake.
