Got Pet Snakes

Hey Rebels Mom, Cool pictures. How did you get Fido to just lay on his back and let your snake kid crawl on him. (What is he name of the snake kid in pics?) He must be a very mellow dog to let that happen. My Oskar would be to fired up to try that. That also was a great picture of snake kid doing lunch. I blew pic up to get a better view. He is a beautiful looking reptile. Rebel looks pretty neat too. I have a American Staffordshire Terrier named LOCA. She is about eight years old and a real sweetheart to.

Can't deal with snakes

Maybe I'm a hypocrite - I profess to love all animals and then there are snakes. I am petrified - even if I see one one the TV. It is so bad that when I lived abroad (France and Cyprus) I couldn't deal with them at all and went home to Ireland (no snakes there aha). When I am ill or going through a rough patch in life, I always dream of snakes biting my ankles and wrapping themselves around me. Now living in England, I can't walk through long grass. It's not the poison in some I'm afraid of. They just terrify me, they don't give me the creeps, they scare the breath out of me literally. But, if you love your snake, good on you. I had two lovely pet rats, (Marsha & Orange) your snakes would have liked them. (I'm joking). Lizzards are cute.

I am sorry your so afraid of snakes. Yes I'm afraid of poisionous snakes also. I don't like the really big Boa's, they make me a little nervus too. But my two Ball Pythons ( Gloria and Monte) only grow about six foot long and they are sweethearts. I handle them daily so they don't turn wild. They love to be handled. You just have to give them a chance. HaHa I'm sure you won't do that. I also have a pet rat named Tasteless, he got that name because neither snake wanted to eat him. So he became a pet also. He turned out to be a sweetheart to.

Glad to hear from you, are both Spike and Oz albino's. Lets hear more about them. How long have you had them? Do you feed live or dead food? Where do you house them? Are they kept seperated? Do you handle them alot? How big are they? Just being nosey and interested. Hope to hear more about Spike and Oz

Spike and Oz

Well Spike is a female and Oz is a male. They are both under 2 years old. Spike is my big girl, almost 2000 grams and about 2 1/2 feet long. Oz is a bit smaller. Right now they live together and are great pals. They share a custom enclosure that is a bit larger than a 55 gal tank. I feed frozen rat weanlings at about 2 every week or so. We (my wife an I) handle them all the time and they are very friendly. My wife is actually the one who loves snakes and is the reason we got them. I plan on breeding them when they are old enough but I'm in no rush. They are pets first. Spike loves being held and will stay stretched out on you for as long as you'll let her. Oz on the other hand is a real go getter. When he is out of the cage he is all over the place, a regular explorer! I have really grown to like them in the time that I have had them...they make great pets :D They are both Albino hets which means they look like regular ball pythons but they carry the albino gene so when they breed they will have some "true" albino offspring.

Spike and Oz sound like really cool snake kids. My Gloria is a female and Monte is the male. I keep them in seperate 55 gal tanks. I never attempted to put them together, don't know what the outcome to that would be. Basically because Monte is the agressive one. Gloria is very mellow and shy. She is the larger of the two, she is about six foot long and the older one. Monte is just a little smaller. They only eat live rats, I tried the frozen ones, but they were not interested in the frozen ones. Hope to hear more about Spike and Oz.

Hey Greg! I'm still sitting here waiting for you to come over and take these snakes out of my yard! Every now and then I check back in on this thread thinking I'll read something that will help me conquer my fear of these critters. But now I think I've reached my limit! Guin33's post about feeding "frozen rat weanlings" put me over the edge!!!:p The yuk factor is just too high for this squeamish gal!

(I know you know I'm just teasing you, Greg, but I want to make sure Guin33 knows I say this all in good fun!)

Ball Python

I have a girl - I named her Emma.

Actually one of my husbands old friends gave it to him and the boys before I moved in - but I adopted her. It made me mad that the kids all thought she was THEIR snake, but they NEVER handle her or give her water. Only when they have friends over that they want to impress - then they fight over who she belongs to. But I am the one who feeds, waters, handles her and cleans out her aquarium. I have a picture of her on my webpage if you check my profile.
Actually the baby (17 mo.) really loves the snake, he goes up and kisses the aquarium and points and squeals until I take her out. then he pets her very softly and tries to kiss her! He wants to hold her, but I am afraid he will squeeze her - so I make him put his hands flat and then set the snake on his hands (I hold her head because she is a little head shy) he thinks she is SO pretty, it is too cute!
Since I live in the High Desert we see a LOT of snakes out here, I have caught three gopher snakes (by myself) and my husband and I have caught a few too! We pretend we are Steve and Terri Irwin (Croc Hunter) and then we move them to the wash -if they get in the yard the dogs will try to eat them!! - ali
