Of course, I'd always go with another boxer, but if that wasn't an option, a yellow lab. I had one that got along so great with my old Jake. They are great, but not the best guard dogs!foolicon

Poor Johnson99, You have been struggling with choosing a breed for a while now. I admire the fact that you want to make the right decision. All breeds have their pros and cons, dont they. You will find that no breed has all pros, thats for sure. I guess you just have to decide what you want most and what you dont want most. What you are willing to live with and what you arent...then narrow it down from there.

AOL has a survey that asks you a bunch of questions then at the end of the survey it tells you what breed would fit you best. Do you have AOL access? That survey may be helpful. If you dont have aol access I can email the survey to you if you want (if it will let me) then take the test for you according to your answers.

BREEDS

I don't think I would have anything that didn't have boxer in them. I love the look and behavior of Weinemiers (sp) and I've always loved the look and attitude of German Shepards.. Maybe someday when I have room for all of them.

I will stick with Boxers for now...

oh man...go with a DOBERMAN. we (home away from college) have a doberman mix, and winston (boxer), and next door lives the most beautiful black and rust doberman. so elegant. he's about 3 years old and wonderfully trained. the three love to play together. what a combination...an AKC boxer and a doberman. i think all the positive traits possible in dogs would just about be covered.
a doberman really is my dream dog. they can be quite expensive if not adopted, but once i am stable (out of college), that is my next animal-investment.
our dobe mix, asia, is virtually 100% doberman with GSD fur; personality, bodytype and everything. as with any dog, it is important that you hand pick the dog to your liking (personality traits). believe me that between the boxer and doberman, your family is safe, five times over.
i personally would never get a blah-lab...too "run of the mill". lean muscular (fairly intimidating looking) dogs are the type for me.
good luck, and check out some books on the breed that seems to fit your preference.

I agree with Jess and Sandio and probably all the others : Once a Boxer friend, it is difficult to appreciate any other breed´. I know : it is narrowminded, but it is stronger than me. My husband agrees.
My borther in Law has a golden retriever. They say it is the perfect family dog etc... etc... You know what : this dog is nice and well behaving and ever soooo dull. It just sits there being nice. So I am sorry I did not help you, I did not pick any dog. I have my two boxers.

I know that I have responded to your posts but if you do a search here and read some stories. You will find alot of people have had thier boxers attacked by mostly labs and retreivers! Go figure right! I haven't come across a story involving a dobie or rottie. Just a thought to pass along. Plus dobie have a ton of energy to match the boxer, labs can't compete!

I voted for the LAB! My husband and I were looking for the "perfect" dog too. Our choices were lab or boxer. I love the boxer we have now but My second pick would be a lab. My uncle has 3 and I know several people who have them they are great dogs all round. Trish

I didn't vote because, they are all playful, cute, and healthy. Some a little more athletic than others depending on size. They can all be protective depending on how they are trained. I would be looking more for other traits, long fur, short fur, tails or not, size of yard or play area you have, other dogs? size? maybe that would make it easier. I know people with the other dogs and they are all nice dogs, I guess it just depends on other things too. Hope this helps.

I voted you should get the the Dobie. I've grown up with them and they have all been great dogs! Always smart, always energetic, and great pets all around. The one dobie I'll never forget was my black one named, Kacey, we got her when I was 3 and the very first time we took her for a walk (she was about 1 or 2 when we got her), I held the leash and she never once pulled on it. Also, she was very watchful of strangers and anyone she didn't know entering the house or where ever we went. (She also protected me from my older brothers, lol! :D - she just barked at them.) Dobermans do like to retrieve and fetch and such. My parents have a dobe now that just loves to fetch turtles, lol! :D
