I think it’s just as lazy to simply call someone and have his or her children and pets taken away. I also had a friend whose apartment was similar to what you described with kids and pets. I spent so much time at his house though, that I actually had the time to clean his place (as gross as that was) and when they started to mess it back up with piles of wrappers I’d jokingly make comments like “what, are you starting a collection?” or “ew, gross, put that away” and they’d clean it up. After many months of training, he does dishes on a daily basis and I’ve even seen him with a vacuum once or twice 
I could never imagine calling authorities one someone I call a friend without talking to them or trying to help them first.
Put yourself in their shoes, for some people that kind of filth is just something they get used to over time. It would probably devastate everyone involved to be suddenly separated.
I’ve seen worse things that kids can be exposed to than filth; although it is unacceptable, it’s not a very good reason to break up a family that may not even realize how they are living.

Not everyone has the time. OR SHOULD. This kids are in an unsafe enviroment, they need to be taken care of. It is not about playing saviour, it is about the childrens welfare.
Abuse is abuse, try being a child growing up in this hell hole and trying to fit in to society. What if in the mean time the child gets dreadfully sick and possibly even dies? What if this happens to a pet? No thanks, I would rather save a life and a childs future, then hope some one wakes the heck up. You want devasted, be a child who grew up in such an enviroment. I have seen them first hand, it is not pretty.
When children are taken away they usually end up back with the original parents (long as they are not in jail or such). This is a wake up call of the immediate kind. The kids need to see this is not healthy or right and the parents need to either get it together or get along without kids and pets.
Many times, it just requires a cop to visit and make comments and stuff gets cleaned up and then they do follow ups. Just because anyone can make babies, does not mean they have the right to keep them any way they want.

Here here Eric, (have the planets shifted?) children learn by example, and this is not a good example to use a tired old cliche, "The circle needs to be broken". There could be mental problems that need addressed, the parents could just need the good scare of CPS and the police showing up at their door, this IS an abusive situation for the children much less the dogs. There is no excuse whatsoever for growing up in these conditions. Please make the call, anonomisly if need be, but help that family.

I completely agree. But I could imagine myself distraught if suddenly someone came in and took my children and pets without first getting up the guts to say something and giving me a chance to fix the problem.
I understand not everyone has the time to help each person but it would be courteous to first speak to him or her about the problem and see his or her point of view. They might see nothing wrong with the way they are living until someone points it out to them.
If I were in that situation (which I don’t see how I would be), I would certainly appreciate a friend having the courage to approach me about it so I could fix the problem. If after that, they still have no intention of cleaning the place up, I would call someone.

IMO,the major difference between someone who's lazy and someone who's mentally ill is that the lazy person has the ability to clean the mess - the mentally ill person does not. Mental illness robs a person of many things - one of them is that they don't have the physical or emotional strength to stay focused enough to complete a task. Especially an enormous task like this cleaning job. When the police intervene most of the officers have people and pets in their lives also. They're not going in with guns a blazin', ripping children from the arms of their parents. A social worker would speak to the family while the officers are present. Many times the children will be placed with relatives (grandparents usually) for a little "vacation." After the pets are checked out by a vet they would be placed for adoption by loving homes. Mom and Dad get a much needed mental health break and treatment. While the family is being helped, cleaning crews go in and empty out the place. The family can be reunited when things have improved with the parents. It's a much better situation than knowing an entire family (especially helpless children and helpless animals) is suffering like this.

Sharon -I would'nt encourage you to go and help clean this place..you would be taking a terrible health risk to yourself. Cleaning crews wear haz mat suits, gloves and respirator masks when cleaning this type of squalor.
