You are doing the right thing. That's the quicksand of adulthood.... most times the right thing is the hardest thing to do. But it must be done and thank God for you to do it.

One or both of the parents may be suffering fom a clinical depression, or other problems that now can be addressed, with help from people who are trained to deal with this. Just think, if the parents didn't have some sort of problems, they themselves wouldn't live like that, let alone allow their children to live in those conditions. Who knows, think of it this way... maybe now not only can the parents get the help offered to them (if they take it) but an agency will see to it that the children are seeing a pediatrician AND a dentist. Address the needs of the little ones who can't speak for themselves. A dentist alone will see by the teeth if the children are getting their nutritional needs met. I know this because my son has a few physical/medical issues and his dentist was QUICK to ask questions at the first sight of my son's teeth!

You are doing a hard thng, but the best thing. I am proud of you and your husband for standing up and taking the bat for this family.

As for an aftermath... just watch yourselves and your family closely. Play it cool and stay in touch with this family. I don't mean be best friends all of a sudden, but act as usual. You will be able to guage what to do by their reactions to this.

Sharon,

You are doing the right thing, one of my husbands aunt use to live like this: 3 kids but no animals but it still smelled like pee. The kids would go poo in the closest because their mom wouldn't wake up when the had to go, the youngest's diaper would drip there was so much pee in his diaper. There was no soap in the house except for a bottle of shampoo.

I baby sat these kids for a few weeks I had heard she wasn't the cleanest but couldn't believe my eyes. I would bring my own soap and bathed the kids after the mother had left. They went to their grand parents (father's side) every 2nd weekend and they would come back with all of their clothes cleaned. I would use those clothes to dress them and teach them the difference between clean and dirty. One morning I even had to bring them breakfast because they had nothing to eat. I cleaned that appartement upside down but couldn't even get rid of the smell. I came back to find it even more dirty a week after.

Her family (sisters and parents) never called the authorities because they though if they helped her she would get better and her kids wouldn't be taken away. After talking to her myself and trying to help I saw there was no way she was going to change. I spoke with the family and treatened to call children services myself if they didn't it, though it a better awakening if the call came from them they made the call that same week.

In the end she lost all 3 kids, their father, not the brightest man, but he keeps them clean and feed got custody. The mother is only allowed to see them under supervision and you know what, even that didn't make her change. She still cries they shouldn't have taken her kids away she had done nothing wrong. I saw the kids only once afterwards (we don't really associate with that side of the family) there was a major improvement in their speech and their manners, someone was now taking care of them properly. If the authorities wouldn't have been called within a week I would have called myself.

Of course it did cause friction, she was after all my husband's aunt. We actually no longer speak to any of his aunts or grandparents on that side of the family. But for those 3 kids to have a better chance at life, it was worth it.

I realize this goes by state (&/or country) and even by county, but my friend worked for DHR in my county and she tried her best to work with the parents first to solve the problems in a situation like this as opposed to just snatching the kids away.

I've listened to stories she's shared of things she's witnessed (no names mentioned...just general explanations of situations.) It's hard to believe humans can be so nasty or downright mean.... Our DHR lost a great worker when she quit to go back to school...

anyway, my point is you just have to think positive and believe the authorities will handle this correctly and with alittle bit of heart. And these folks will get the help they need to be the parents their children deserve.

It sounds like you are doing the right thing Sharron. You and your husband have put a lot of thought into this, and you are not making a hasty decision. All of the reasons you stated for calling are more than valid. The kids and dogs are lucky there is someone like you to so carefully weigh their future. Please keep us posted....

Sharon, you are doing the right thing! After your first post I was under the impression that the children were older so I naturally assumed they were making part of the mess. But in light of your latest post, I realize there is no way those little kids can be making a contribution to the garbage pile, if they are it is minimal.

Make the call and continue on as if you know nothing. Continue stopping by the house occassionally as if nothing has happened. You will know by the way they treat you if you are a suspect in their mind.

I don't envy you for being in this situation and I believe that you are saving 3 babies lives along with several animals.

God Bless You and your Husbandangelicon
