I think it likely is mostly dependant on the dog him/herself. My first boxer, Tiger, he was aggressive to ALL dogs, but never once even barked at another human. My second Boxer, Spike (Spikey is what we called him), he was always on edge when new people came around. Wouldnt bark but would occasionally growl and was almost ALWAYS watching any new person, on guard so to speak. Scarlet, my newest boxer, she doesnt seem to like new people around. Not aggressive, just indifferent. She loves other dogs though, but kind of avoids other people. Im not sure she would bite any burglar.

Depends on how the dog was raised and the personality it develops on its own I think.

Blade and Niaya

Are both very alert and protective. No one can sneak up on me when I am home alone.... Niaya, my adoptive 2 year old baby girl (my princess) is more vocal than Blade. But if it is a visitor who has been a frequent visitor and friend while they are out they sniff and quickly settle down for a friendly visit. ;)
I don't think they would immediately bite, but they would jump on a stranger and depending on my response they could attack.

I don't think Mugsy would attack anyone, but he is very protective of me. Anytime someone pulls into out driveway or knocks on the door, he springs into action - barking and growling. Of course I know he couldn't hurt a fly, but he sounds viscious (sp?).

We haven't been robbed (knock on wood) so I'm not sure how he would react. Last Sunday, we were at his obedience class. A couple had a huge St. Bernard who apparently didn't take to Mugsy. When he went near it, the St. Bernard showed his teeth and growled. Well, this really scared Mugsy for the entire class. He had his ears tucked back and kept trying to climb on my lap. To make a long story short, at the end of class, we had to walk our dogs and stop to pet the other dogs. When I went to pet the St. Bernard, Mugsy jumped in front of my and puched my away from it. According to the trainer, Mugsy was trying to protect me. So maybe he would attack if someone came in the house.

Dutch is very intimidating to people who don't know him because he will bark and have his hair raised on his back if people are walking along the street or if people are coming towards the house. He also jumps on the storm door and has since busted it open a few times...(luckily we have caught him soon enough to not run up into the street). Needless to say...we lock that now!! But he seems very protective until he knows that we are familiar with the person. Then he just wants to play and lick their face off. Everyone loves him as soon as they are in the door. Though, I am sure he would play off on our reaction in a time of need. It makes me feel very comfortable when i am alone also. I love their keen sense of hearing. The one thing he understands the best is "Who's here???" I never see him respond to a command faster than that one and I think it is great. I love my little baby!

Victor would.

Victor is a gentle giant, at 10 months old he is 58 lbs. He normally likes everyone, but we have had a couple of "questionable" visitors stop to ask for directions, and once, Victor's hair raised in a stripe down his back, and the bark was much more gutteral. I'm honestly not sure Victor would have let him out of his truck, but the guy knew better than to try. He definetly is on patrol in the yard, but usually greets everyone with slobbers and a wigglebutt. He knows to stay down, but I have no doubt if someone was trying to break in, they wouldn't get far. I don't know if he would actually attack or bite, but he would sure freeze you in your tracks. I think the Boxer doesn't need any encouragement to be protective, if you or his children were in any actual danger, it is more rare for them to run and hide, or panic.

Alarm

My boxer would let anyone in as long as he got to be petted. He does make quite a lot of noise when anyone is outside of my house and he has scared off someone trying to break into a friends Jeep. But if they were to get in the house he would do nothing more than make noise until he was scratched on the back...

Boxers are known to be "hearing" guard dogs meaning that they alert that when they hear something, but they aren't known to be physically aggressive. However, I have known a few boxers that would protect their human if he/she was in trouble- my boxer (Bella) is one of those types. It has been my experience that if someone is breaking in and your boxer is free to run around, the barking and sheer look of a boxer scares a LOT of people. Bella barks whenever someone knocks at the door and everyone who doesn't know her gets nervous. Despite what a lot of people think, boxers aren't breed to protect. But they are definitely loyal!

Hi. I so believe that Joe would protect us as needed. When we were in Durango a few weeks ago, we saw some of his protectiveness. It was great. We went on a walk and then we were going on a picnic. We had Joe and Scampy with us. My husband went into the grocery store to get us lunch while our two daughters, two dogs, and I waited outside. A homeless man had been following us for a bit on our walk. When we stopped to wait for my husband, he stopped and sat not too far from us. I was not worried because we had Joe. Joe did let many people go by us without a second look. However, when this man stagered up (he was drunk) Joe jumped up and got in his guard pose. He let out one deep bark and stared the guy down. The man told us that our dog was scary and kept moving on!!! Until my husband came back, Joe would not stop looking in the direction that the man went. We could not even distract him! I have no doubt that if that man was crazy enough to approach us, Joe would have sprung into action. I LOVE my Boxer!

I don't know what Nitro at 5 months would do in this situation. I actually haven't heard him bark at anybody ever since. The only time he would bark is when he can get his toys lol. But I noticed in few occasions that no matter what we are doing if he heard a strange noise he will stop and sit in front of me while looking at the direction where the noise came from and he would walk besides me while im checking it out (is he trying to protect me or is he trying to tell me to protect him lol). One time I was playing with Nitro when my dad and his friend visited me and went to the backyard unannounced. When Nitro heard the gate opened he suddenly stop what he's doing and sat in front me. When he saw my dad he stood up and started wiggling his tail but when he saw my dad's friend he stop wiggling his tail and alertly looked at my dad's friend. He didn't start wiggling his tail until I said hi to my dad's friend. I think he can sense when im afraid or not and he based his reaction to that.

We where burgled and my dog slept through it we assumed. But it wasn’t his fault as my parents had left the back door open by mistake. So the thief’s didn’t have to break in. They just stole a handbag from the kitchen while the dog was upstairs asleep. All I can say was that the thief was one lucky person.

My dog was mad lol. He was a big male boxer about 75-80kg and would go for anyone apart from his inner circle.

One day the postman came to the door and he got out by mistake. This postman was pinned to the garden fence with snarling jaws staring him in the eyes.

Another time we awoke in the night to see him at the backdoor growling and trying to get out. When we looked in the back garden we saw a man standing by our garage who made a quick exit.

We even had the Police come to our house advising us on how to protect our house from local area burglars. They laughed and said do we need to advise you. You have one of the best forms of protection we have seen lol. He wouldn’t let them in the house lol.

Anyone who came near his house the dog would see off. I have the up most faith in Boxers and they are an alert breed. They only bark for genuine reasons and I know my dog would have protected me and even now.

RIP boy.
