Boxer Traits

Another and probably one of the most important to me is their protectiveness. I haven't really noticed any posts here about this particular trait, but I would like to share a story with you. When I was in high school I live across the street from a serial rapist and killer. Of course we didn't know this, but Hans did! Everytime this boy came over to the house Hans would stand in front of me with hackles up! Two years after our graduation he was caught. Thank God, but I will never forget Hans' intuition. I possibly saved my life. I have seen a boxer literally sacrifice himself to save a human life and I truly believe any one of my three precious babies would do it for my family.
We boxer owners are truly lucky people!
Not to mention when the grandparents come to visit we take bets on which one of our many kids will get to the lap first!!!

Our boxer was the sweetest thing on four legs. Funny, sweet, smart and half human. My husband worked grave yard and having Bob in the house to watch over us was a lifesaver literally. He loved all people. There were a few times when he would raise his hackles as you said and growl, like being approached while I was in my car with all the kids. Or if I was home by myself with just Bob, you better watch out. He didn't bark as a habit, but when he did, you better believe there was something wrong outside. That dog would've killed and died for me. It is just amazing that a dog as goofy and playful as a boxer has the instincts to pick up on evil or bad intentions. I love that feeling. I am little 5' 2" and @ 105 lbs. Pretty helpless actually if someone wanted to hurt me. I thank God for the time I had with that dog.

My Harley is the same way! He just came back from 3 weeks in PA with this WONDERFUL woman who works with stubborn dogs. Harley is a sweetie, but he is still having major puppy fits, where his ears are back and he snarls and growls and paws hard. he can take me down in a heartbest and i'm a little worried about his aggressive behaviour. does nyone know of any ways to calm him down a bit? he seems to get very aggressive and very out of control. we were hoping that the training program we sent him to would help, but this was one issues that was not reseolved in training. he is doing really well aside from the puppy fits (the woman did a wonderful job at getting him to obey commands and he sits very nicely - though slightly crooked).
I would appreciate any help anyone has to offer. i've had him for 8 months or so and i'm a little afraid i won't be able to calm him down. HEEEELP ;)

Sounds like he is trying to establish authority. Have you shown him who's boss? By that I mean have you rolled him into a submissive position which is on his back and held him there till he calms down? When you play with him say for example, tug of war, never let him win. Make him drop it when you've had enough of the game. When entering the house do you greet your family first, ignoring the dog till everyone else has had hugs and kisses? Then it's the dogs turn as the bottom of the pack. Just a few thoughts. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong on any of these points. We had a similar problem with one of our dogs awhile back and to tell you the truth I was afraid because "he could take me down anytime he chose". I think he picked up on that as well. I had to show him who was boss though. It took patience, time and consistency with consequences. Just a few thoughts. There are links on this site called behavioral problems. Do a search of the forums. There is always great advice from people who know a whole lot more than I do.

Good luck and hang in there.

I think this is why Boxers are and always will be my favorite breed! Because their traits are so consistant. My Sirus is such a cuddlebug!!! He loves to sit on laps (even though he's 13 months old and weighs almost 80lbs!) And like someone mentioned before, when they are laying next to you...they have to be touching you. Sirus always makes my legs fall asleep because he is practically laying on them! I love it though! And his talking like Chewbaca!!! That is one of my favorite Boxer traits. Every boxer I have ever known has done it. When their lips scrunch up and they look like they are pouting...TOO cute!!! Also the way their tails move a million miles per hour (as if the speed makes up for the lack of lenghth!!! LOL) when they are excited! And last but not least...A Boxer "welcome home" is the best welcome home you will ever recieve!!!

Leah, James, and Sirus too!!!

I also forgot to mention that Sirus does this weird bark...actually it sounds like laughing...when he is dreaming. It is the funniest thing! It always makes me laugh! But the only two people that have ever seen it are myself and my brother. He won't do it with anyone else around! The weirdo!

Leah, James, and Sirus too!!!

Lying on their backs

Our Boxer Grace, who lived to be 10 1/2 years old, always laid on her back. I read once that in Boxers, it is a sign of contentment. We called it "Boxer Pilates". And now our nine month old, Olivia, does it too. My parents have a female and my brother has a male and they both do it, too.

First, she loves to give "flea bites" - she uses the edge of her teeth to nibble me - when I'm goofing with the kids, she will kind of growl and nibble a little harder - when I laugh because it tickles, she nibbles a little harder - the harder I laugh, the harder she nibbles! I usually wind up on the floor cause my legs won't hold me after laughing that hard, but still with Clari nibbling away!

HA! I call this "TURBO NIBBLIN'S"

Louie does the same thing...

My boy O, waiting at the bridge, was a nibbler too. He was too funny at it, but very soft. There was a time I was laying on the floor, I guess he thought it was play time, he came and nibbled me in the side, just above the waist area, he made it tickle, his little nibbles...
Just had to tell you all because you were talking about nibbling.
My girl Roxy doesn't nibble, I'm still working with her because I adopted her from a mean  home. She will be a Sweetie one day, I keep telling her she is. hint hint;) ;) ...
I love her though, she is my Sweetie, she dryed my eyes when "O" man went to the bridge. I LOVE our breed, they are such GREAT kids !!!!!!!!

My boy, Butch, is a nibbler. We call it "gumming" because it just tickles and doesn't hurt. I had no idea dogs did this so when he started I thought he was a weird-o. Butch was adopted as an adult so this behavior was brand new to me as a seventy five pound dog clamps down on my arm. Butch always goes for the arms when he wants to gum someone. :p

I wish my Brody who is about 60 or 65 lbs. would just be a "gummer." He uses those sharp teeth of his when he gets overly excited. He put a toothmark in my arm last night. He's doing a whole lot better about barking at every sound and I'm glad about that. Potty training is another story!!!!!!!!!!!!
