Boxer Buddy
Some Boxer traits we've noticed so far...
Here are some "Boxer traits" we've noticed so far. Our 2 year old female Boxer keeps inventing more "traits" as she gets older, so who knows how many she will come up with!
1) Keeping herself clean like a cat. She loves to play in mud puddles but after she is done, she spends countless hours licking herself clean if we don't bath her with water.
2) Lets us know if "foreign objects" like dead leaves, or dried up insects have entered the room and asks us to dispose of them by placing her raised front leg over the object and pumping it up and down 6 inches above it until we pick it up and throw it in the trash.
3) Silently patrols the doors and windows and runs over to us, making a very low gurgle sound until she gets our attention and then runs back to the spot where the tresspasser is located. She doesn't care about other animals like possums, dogs or cats, just humans who are entering our backyard or coming up our driveway without our permission. A very good thing!
4) Asks to be allowed to crawl under the blanket throws at night by swinging her head from side to side like an elephant until we lift up the blanket and let her curl up underneath.
5) Likes her water bowl full to the brim of fresh, clean water....no dirty water for her. She goes over to the water bowl and clicks her nails on the rim of the ceramic water bowl until we notice and then refill it with fresh, cold water.
6) Asks for food at exactly the same times each day...very rigid about this ever since she first came home at 7-1/2 weeks old. She keeps her girlish and slim figure and refuses to over eat. I wonder if other German dogs are as regimented about eating as she is. She also will refuse to eat if her food hasn't been placed in a volcano shape...flat food is distasteful to her. If you put food down for her and it's not the "right time" or in the "right configuration with a pointed top" she will walk away and go lay down with a sigh as if to say "my, my, you made a mistake today. I'm so disappointed in you right now."
7) Acts like a fearless hero whenever she thinks one of us has made mistake and done something unsafe. She will literally squeeze her body between us and the dangerous unknown person or thing, if we don't take the necessary precautions before opening the door for strangers, etc. She expects us to ALWAYS ask "who's there?" before reaching for the door knob. If we forget she takes over and protects us from our own blunder. She doesn't growl at the person on the other side of the door...only makes sure she would be the one to take the first hit or gun shot IF it was someone who wanted to harm us. Once you ask the proper words...she turns and goes back to her place.
8) Tries to make friends with ALL dogs, even vicious, fearful ones. This can be problematic, especially with possessive, aggressive dogs or dogs not spayed or neutered. Even if they attack her, she runs off and then comes back later as if to say..."I've forgiven you...now let's play!" And sometimes it works...and they play with her!
9) Understands many words such as "Boxer", "cute", "beautiful", "what do we have here?" and "I love Boxers!" If she hears them, she assumes that the person saying them (a stranger) LOVES her and absolutely WANTS to meet her and be treated to "extreme Boxer love". Now that she is older (2 years) she has begun to tone down the love to more acceptable levels, but if she sees someone for the 2nd time that she met previously, she acts as though they just came back from the dead and she is over-joyed that they are still alive.
10) Stalks and catches flies and spiders and kills them with pride.
12) Loves cats and tries to play with them as though they were another Boxer dog by turning her backend to them and running away a few inches hoping to get the cat to chase her.
13) Acts as a Guardian Dog when we are camping or picnicking and watches if people get too close to our "area". She stacks herself just like a German Boxer with her rear legs pushed way back and hops into position facing who ever is heading through our area. She does not growl or lunge, just watches them very intently. If we tell her it's alright, she relaxes and then begins her kidney beaning for the stranger's entertainment.
14) Loves water....any kind of water! The ocean, a lake, a river, a puddle or a backyard pool. BUT so far she can't swim. She even puts her whole head under the water and blows bubbles sometimes. She generally runs all the way to the depth where she can still stand and then runs back. If you don't take her in the water with you, she whines to express her grief at being excluded from the water games.
