    Tta Or Tplo?

Holy cow!!! TPLO surgery at the University of Missouri is $1500-1800. As far as TTA vs TPLO, I would definitely go for the TPLO. My Bullmastiff had his left leg done in February, and is scheduled to have his right leg done in July.

Cookie lost her battle with lymphoma

Last night, I received an email from an artist from whom I had commissioned a drawing of Cookie over two years ago. I had forgotten about the drawing, and evidently she had packed it to send, but it had gotten misplaced among other artwork in her apartment and never sent. She was writing to...

Cookie lost her battle with lymphoma

My dear, sweet Cookie, 14 years old, went to the bridge today. She received her lymphoma diagnosis about six weeks ago. This was the fourth cancer diagnosis for her in the last 2.5 years, but was the one we knew we couldn't beat. We tried chemotherapy in an attempt to prolong her good...

    Cancer is back

Miracles DO happen! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for all your thoughts and prayers. Cookie visited the neurologist on Tuesday. He was very nice, and shared with me that he grew up with Boxers (never less than 3 at a time!), his parents grew up with Boxers, and his GRANDPARENTS grew up...

    Cancer is back

It has been a while since I last posted. A full-time job with no internet access kind of limits the time I'm able to spend on Boxerworld. Some of you may remember my Cookie and her fight against cancer from 12/04 to 7/05. She was apparently cancer-free for almost a year. A couple of weeks...

Histiocytoma- Still here after 2 months

Keep an eye on it. Almost every histiocytoma will go away, it just takes time. However, a very small percentage of histiocytomas will suddenly start growing. My Bullmastiff had one on his foot that was pencil eraser-sized for two months, then suddenly blew up to the size of a quarter and had to...

    Worried about hip surgery

I went back and read your post in the health forum. I'd go ahead with the glucosamine, as it can't hurt. I've also had good luck with Adequan in my own dogs, as well as my patients.

    Worried about hip surgery

My first surgery patient in vet school was a BIG lab/chow mix that was in for FHO for hip dysplasia. At that time, we opted to cut the side that was more severely affected, so if he ended up needing a total hip replacement later, he'd still have a hip to do it on. If I recall correctly, he did...

    Cassius' Path report.....MCT

Cookie had a low-grade 2 MCT removed with clean margins last March. With no further treatment, she has had no recurrence. Had it been a high-grade 2, I probably would have treated her with Vinblastine. Straight from the mouth of a veterinary oncologists, the prognosis for Boxers with MCT is...

    Cancer, vacines, etc.....

If my dog had a grade 1 mast cell tumor with clean margins, I would continue to vaccinate and give heartworm preventative like she had not had the tumor at all. In fact, my Cookie had a grade 2 MCT, neurofibrosarcoma, and another peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and she gets vaccinated as usual...

    Ideas? worried

It sounds like Oscar was in some sort of discomfort. He could very well have pulled or strained something, or he may have arthritis. How old is he?

    painkillers?

In theory, something like superglue should not be toxic once it has cured. My recommendation would be to trim that nail as short as possible to keep the remaining part from snagging on things. You might also look into something like Softpaws nail covers to protect that nail until it grows out.

Help! The vet has no answers!

Have they tested for any other fungal diseases? I'd test for histoplasmosis and blastomycosis.

    Thoughts on heartworm prevention?

I always give heartworm preventative year-round. There is a VERY high incidence of heartworm infection in my area, and I know that dogs on neighboring farms have tested positive. I have a 5 acre pond on my property, so there is no way I can eliminate all mosquitoes, and we have coyotes in the...
