painkillers?

Maya injured her toenail over the weekend - it was split in half horizontally right to the toe - exposing all the quick, causing a lot of pain.

We called the vet to book an appointment but he told us that there wasn't a lot to do but remove the top half of the nail, which could wait till today. In the meantime, he said we could give her aspirin.
I took her in today to get the nail removed, which looked and sounded extremely painful. Vet applied ointment and wrapped it up.

Question is, how much aspirin and how often? Maya's 63 pounds and two years old. Or is there anything better?

My goodness! That sounds extremely painful!

I was going to suggest something topical, but then it's hard to find something that is safe for your baby in case it's ingested.

As for aspirin? I'd give the vet a call to make sure...You could also try a search through threads on this site...just type in "aspirin"

Best of luck. Sampson and I send your baby healing vibes.angelicon

Thanks for the link re: aspirin. I'd rather not give her anything, but she is quite uncomfortable, so I suppose it's a good idea.

Three cheers for BW moderators! The advice on this site is great!

Oh my gosh!!! That hurts ME just thinking about it!

Though, I'm surprised your vet didn't send you home with some prescription painkillers for her?? If her pain continues, maybe you could call them back tomorrow and get some for her, instead of relying on asprin.

We're sending healing vibes to Maya!! I hope she feels better soon!

crazy glue, contact cement?

Maya's nail was healing up till last week, when it split again. It's not as bad this time, but I am curious if there's anything we can include in her diet that will help her nails stay strong and hard, but not brittle.

Also, could we theoretically glue her nail together - the problem seems to be that it's growing back, but keeps getting caught and split open - if we could glue it together, eventually it would heal and grow out, correct?

Question is, once it's hard, would it be toxic or not?

In theory, something like superglue should not be toxic once it has cured. My recommendation would be to trim that nail as short as possible to keep the remaining part from snagging on things. You might also look into something like Softpaws nail covers to protect that nail until it grows out.

I was just going to suggest the same thing. They make rubber caps for cats nails, as an alternative to declawing them, look into an option like this maybe?

Just FYI, my vet had me give 1 baby aspririn every 4-6 hrs to Buddy after his surgery. I only gave it to him at night for 3 nights more or less to just to make sure cause I couldn't really tell if he was in pain or not.

thanks for the info

Thanks for the information about the nail covers and superglue. Hopefully one of these things works well.

We did have the nail trimmed, but the tear goes all the way to her toe, so when it grows out, it grows in two halves and gets caught. We need to cover or glue it together to ensure it has a chance to heal. We also have boots we can put on her, but no doubt she won't want to wear one for a month!
