Why did you pick him/her?

We decided that we wanted to get a boxer and got in contact with a breeder in the area. We had originally planned on getting a fawn boxer but all the breeder had was brindles. We figured we would just go see them and in case we didn't find another puppy, we would get one. WELL...we got there and she brought out all the boys...and we took a look at all of them. They were about three weeks old when we picked and out of the four boys, Dutch was the only one not crying when his mommy wasn't around. The other three were crying because they couldn't smell her. He was the biggest one and was so laid back, we picked him then and there...we also...had to wait 5 more weeks to get him as he was too young...I must say the LONGEST 5 weeks ever! I wouldn't trade Dutch for anything in the world and the funniest part is...a lot of people are so attracted to his coat...They all love his color! Taking him into a pet store is like a job in itself because everyone comments and then wants to play with him and I start working up a sweat trying to keep him under control. But I still take him anyway! I get such a kick out of that stuff. But...that's how Dutch quietly drifted into our lives

Well, I bought Hammer from a BYB, a friend of a friend kind of thing. I now know better, but I didn't then. They were only selling the black masked puppies for $300 and I didn't have a lot to spend at the time because my husband was laid off and I knew puppy stuff (vet care etc) would be expensive too. So I decided on one of the 4 black masked pups.

They took them all out and placed them into a little plastic kiddie pool. I already knew I wanted a male, but 3 of the 4 were male. This was in late May and it was already quite hot in Texas at the time. This one little guy kept jumping out of the pool to find the small spot of shade under the rim of the pool. I thought to myself, now there is one smart puppy. I was sold. I have never regretted my decision for a moment. Okay well, maybe some moments in the first couple of months, but not since then!

We started reasreaching breeders months before vegas was born. We finally found one and went to visit. They grilled us, all the questions they are supposed to ask and then some. She sent us home with a reading list then told us to come back when we did what she asked.

We went back in August and Vegas wasn't born until October. So finally the puppies were born but only 4 and 2 were bitches and she wanted to keep them. So we freaked thinking we would not get one cause there was a list. The guy ahead of us had been waiting for a year for one so he got first pick. Our breeders husband told her that we had made such an effort and had been by so many times before they were even born that he thought we should get one. So we went up and we got to see which one was actually ours. Our breeder thought we would have our hands full cause he was the most active out of them all. Little did we know that we would be taking puppy class with Vegas's litter brother and it turned out we were lucky cause his brother ended up being the hyper one.

We origionally wanted a fawn girl but when we saw them we didn't care and were glad to have got one at all. Funny we ended up getting the total oppisite, a brindle male. But I am glad we did. :)

I got Rocky from a store (GASP!) and paid a fortune but I wanted a boxer and did not want to order a dog. I wanted to be able to meet the dog and see how he/she interacts with my dh and I. After visiting with a few boxers, everyone that was in front of me was the one I wanted. But we went back and bought Rocky becasue he was born on my wedding day!

I got my miniature dachshund as a result of envy. My brother and his then wife had just gotten an 8 week old male Jack Russell Terrier. I HAD to have a puppy. I knew I wanted a dachshund, but they kept telling me I should get a female JRT. We went to a local pet store just to look at the two breeds to see which one I liked more (of course, I already had my mind made up). The next day my then SIL and I looked around town for ads for miniature dachshunds. I wanted a black and tan one, but the only ad we could find was for red ones. We decided to just go look at them since it was getting late. We got lost and it took us over an hour to get to the breeder's house.
There were 2 9-week old males left. I looked at the mother, who seemed very sweet and then got in the floor to check out the boys. They were both red, but one had a little bit of black down his back and tail (it looked like the end of his tail was burned, lol). This one crawled into my lap and fell asleep while the other one ran around playing with the breeder's children. I definitely had to have the one in my lap. I took him home that night and he has been the love of my life for the last 2.5 years.
When I moved to a big city by myself, I wanted a larger dog that would seem intimidating to possible intruders. I researched several breeds and finally decided that a boxer would be perfect for my lifestyle. I planned to rescue a boxer, but then my mom found an ad for 2 boxers being given away. I was more than excited, but I wasn't moving into my apartment for another 2 weeks. I called the breeder and she told me she had a five year old female that didn't get along with other dogs and a young male that her son picked out of a litter because he looked just like Petey from the Little Rascals. He went to college and couldn't take him and the breeder's mother was sick, so she needed to find him a home with lots of time and love. She asked me a lot of questions and told me that a lot of people were interested in him. I asked if it would be okay if my mother called about coming to look at him that weekend. She said that was fine. My mom called and talked to her for a while about my lifestyle and how I treat Bailey. The breeder said that she wanted me (of all the candidates!!!) to have Beau. I snuck home that weekend to go see him with my mom. She kept telling me not to get my hopes up because it might not work out. We took Bailey with us to see how they would get along. We pulled up to the house and I saw a beautiful boxer boy looking at me out of the door. The breeder opened the door and Beau came out running. I knew I had to have him. He was so affectionate. He loved on my mom and me and was very curious about Bailey. We loaded him up and took him to my mom and dad's. He had to stay there until I moved to my apartment. He moved in that day, too. I now have 2 loves in my life and couldn't be happier. I don't think they could be either. They are the best of friends.

What a great thread!

I didn't have a choice with Luka. The breeder put several short vidieos on her site so I'd seen the litter, but when I came to her home to meet them- oh! They were all so funny! hanging over the top of their pen, all 6 of them w/ their little tounges hanging out and little nubbs wagging. The breeder said this is the one I thought would be a good match for you- and she plucked Luka out of the pen and handed him to me! (she knew I wanted a male)

I'd held very few puppies- let alone one that would be mine (after 4 intense years of every single day wanting one) and he was so wiggly and licky. We sat on the couch and he sat on my lap and that was it- I was in love. He laid down and rested his chin on my arm and played with me and then she brought out one of his sisters and they played. I stayed about an hour and it was so hard to wait the next 4 weeks for him!

I was kinda disapointed that I didn't get to choose, but the breeder made a great choice and I knew she knew them better. Except for me having to work, we are inseperatable, do everything together. I wouldn't have it any other way- and I know Luka wouldn't either.

The Ugly Duckling!

My husband and I bought our first puppy his name was Copper and he was a mini daschund (sp?). He was the coolest dog we'd ever met. Then he died 2 months later :( of Parvo, it was completely devistating to us. We'd had no clue what Parvo even was. Just knew that our hearts were broken because our baby was gone...

About 6 months went by and baby feaver still continued but we were so scared! We spent the next full year researching the boxer breed and reading up on Parvo among other diseases. A lot of our research was done here on BW! Our mind was made up! Unfortunately we found Dexter via the internet...UG I know, we didn't know any better yet. However instead of the breeder grilling me I grilled them over the phone and through e-mail.

I also went and interviewed Vets before his arrival... ones around town told me that Dexter would not survive no matter what precations I took to try and kill the Parvo, talk about close minded quack Dr.'s. I finally found one that would work with me and pay special attention to Dexter. Here we are a 1 1/2 later. I tell ya though after the last set of shots a HUGE sigh of relief was let out!

To get to the point we picked Dexter because he was soooo ugly that he was cute. We picked him when he was just 2 days old, some of his really young pics are in my gallery if you want to see what I mean. He has turned into a very handsome boy though and is VERY smart!

Who picked who?

We got Mush simply cause she needed us. There she sat in this tiny dark cage at the shelter hidden away in isolation with a broken leg. I saw a flyer out front that had her picture so i asked if I could just see her. They brought me into isolation and as soon as I bent down to see what the heck was in this cage, she came right up to the front and broken leg and all couldn't control that butt or that tongue. I looked up at my husband and said "we can't leave this dog here". Then they told us that she would be put to sleep the next day cause "no one wants a broken dog". I looked up at the guy and said "she's only 4 months old for pete's sake". He just walked away. So, that's how we got Mush. It was fate. We picked each other. Especially since we had no intention of getting another dog. We were there to check on a dog we found to see if it's owners claimed it.

My BIL introduced us to Coco's breeders. When the pups were born we went over and looked at all of them. I had my eye on another brindle when we first saw them. We went & visited again at 3 weeks & 6 weeks. During the sixth week visit we were holding the other one and looking at her. Coco jumped out of her bed and came over to Chad. He picked her up and she nuzzled right into his neck and lay quietly. She seemed to have decided who was taking her.

"His eyes?"

My husband and I were mourning the loss of Magic and needed to see boxers. So, we visited San Jose boxer rescue. It was my first time at a rescue. We took each boxer one by one for a walk but we missed one. We were about ready to leave when I spotted Deeg quietly leaning against his cage door. When we took him out of his cage he was a wild playful boy. He had zero manners. Since I lost my Magic a month before we found Deeg, I did not know if I were in any shape to get another boxer so soon. However, my husband saw past all my pain and sorrow and said "We're going back to get Deeg!" My hubby knew I needed another boxer to help me through the healing process. He was right, it did help to get Deeg. I really do not know why we choose Deeg as I was going through so much emotions at the time. But, I do know, that when I first saw him I fell in love with his eyes. I saw a promise in them. It has been 3 months since we got him and now I understand the promise that I first saw in his eyes. The promise is: "If you'll be my family and give me a chance by being steady in my life, I will grow into a wonderful and faithful friend...I'll be yours forever." I am so glad we gave Deeg a chance.
