What do you do for a living?

I thought this might be a fun thread to start. I got the idea from another thread on here. Also, are you allowed to bring your baby with you to work? I am thinking of changing professions and would like some ideas, especially if they include bringing my baby(ies) with me!

So...I work as a paralegal in a decent sized law firm who represents people who have been in auto accidents. I have a bachelors degree and some classes towards my masters, but am making absolutely nothing for money. I am the lowest paid paralegal (of 6) in the firm because I have only been here 3 years. I have decided I want a job where I am not stuck in an office all day. I want to get out and interact with people more. Dont get me wrong, I love the part of my job where I actually get to help people and have learned a lot and seen a lot, but I hate being stuck in an office. I want to be able to come and go as I please, which, I know, is very rare in most jobs :D

So...let hear about everyone else!

I work for a dermatologist's office in our "medical esthetics" area. we have 6 docs, 3 who ONLY do skin cancer. :eek: i'm the receptionist, but of course, i do a lot more than that!! when i got married, i took off a week, and the girls were "DYING" without me there... i've been here 3 years, but i know i'm not irreplaceable.

I'm going to school for nursing, but i think i'm going to change it to a masters in counseling or psychology... i already have 2 degrees, so maybe i'm just wanting to become a professional student!!

I work for a small business owned by a guy I've known since we were both in diapers. I've been here for 10 years. He is an electrical manufacturer's representative. I run the office...there are only 3 of us! My hours are very flexible. M-F 6 hours a day. If my kids are sick, I stay home and forward the office phone to my home. When I brought Bayleigh home at 6 weeks old, she came to work with me for the first 2 weeks. I still bring her if I am only here for a few hours but she tends to be too nosy! My boss has 2 labs that come in with him sometimes.

I've also done the stay at home mom thing. My kids are teenagers now and I'd probably go nuts staying at home!

I would love to become a dog trainer but really don't know where to go for training.

Unfortunately, I am also stuck in an office all day. I work for a fairly large gases and chemicals company, @ 40,000 employees globally. I am in the Global IT department, not really that fun, I wish I had not majored in Computer Science, but too late to think about that now that I have a mortgage!

Well, I get paid to watch television all day (sort of). I'm a television editor. I edit reality tv (like "The Girls Next Door" for E!) and documentaries (like "Biography" for A&E and "Star Wars" The Legacy Revealed" for History Channel).

I, too, am stuck indoors all day, but I have a nice courtyard at work where we take breaks and eat lunch. I've occasionally brought my dogs in with me on the weekends, and I've brought a foster dog in with me during the the work week twice. I don't like to push my luck. The owners of the facilities are very nice about it, but my I don't think my Executive Producer likes dogs.

I actually went to college and got a degree in Television Production: B.A. Communications (although most of my colleagues just worked their way up the production ladder). I initially thought I wanted to be a director, but I loathed the production aspects and hours and the "hurry up and wait" qualities. I discovered that I can be very creative in the editing process and I can have (mostly) regular hours, and I get to sit in air conditioned bays with coffee nearby.

I've been doing it about 15 years, but I started off cutting promos (commercials) for "Family Feud" and "Baywatch", and finally worked my way into long form programming.

The best advice I can give anyone who wants to get into it is to take ANY job you can get that allows you to work around the people whose jobs you want. Stay late, ask questions, pay attention, be proactive and competent. People will notice you and when a vacancy comes up, they will almost always hire from within because they don't have the time to read resumes and conduct interviews. I'm working with an editor now who was my assistant last year. He showed ambition and promise and all the editors here lobbied hard to get him the promotion when we needed a 4th editor. My husband started out as a security guard at a special effects company and now he is a special effects supervisor.

Just another office person! I've worked for a company who manufactures and distributes product to the manufactured housing industry for 21 years. Currently I'm a sales administrator for our nationwide distributor network. Not very glamorous but it pays the bills and occassionally sends me and my DH on some pretty nice all expense paid trips!

I work for Primeland Cooperatives as an Agronomy/Grain Secretary. Primeland is a subsidiary of Cenex Harvest States. And in a nutshell, I'm the bookkeeoper for my office. I love my job and feel fortunate living and working in smalltown, USA.

Lucky for me, my dogs are outside napping on the lawn.
