Very scary moment

Yesterday was gray, rainy and cold. The dogs rang the bell to go out and were outside for about 10 minutes, doing business and basically running around (trying to keep warm I presume).

Susie rang the cowbell to come back in and I went to the door and opened it. She and Rider came running in as fast as can be but Maggie was not in sight. I called for Maggie to come (often, she will only come in after being called). Again, no Maggie. My heart leapt into my throat.

I was in my jammies and househoes, not really dressed for outdoors but I went out and looked all over for Maggie, calling for her to come. She was not in the yard at all. I checked all the fencing to see if there was a hole where they may have dug an escape route (unlike them). I know Maggie knows that she can scale the chain link fence if she wants, but she's never tried.

I got really scared and decided to go back inside, get a coat and better shoes on and go looking for her around the neighborhood. She couldn't have been far as they'd not been outside very long.

As I approached the door, there were all THREE dogs, Maggie, Susie and Rider, looking at my thru the storm door like I had lost my mind. Whew!! I was never to glad to see Maggie in my life!

I still don't know how she slipped by me when Susie and Rider came into the house but she must have done so and I didn't see her come in at all.

Thinking your dog is out, running loose is one of the most awful thoughts in the world and just sickened me. I was so afraid I'd lost her and she'd get lost somewhere or get picked up by AC or someone not so nice. She didn't have on her ID collar at the time so I was doubly concerned since there would be no way to contact me if someone nice did find her and take her in and try and find her owner.

Thank goodness she's such a good dog. The thought of losing her was too much for me to bear. I just broke down and cried and hugged all 3 of them until they wouldn't let me hug them anymore.

I hate scary moments like that!!

Oh Dan...that is sooo frightening! Coco had me feeling that way only one time and it is just an instant sickness in the pit of your stomach along with panic and everything else. Thank Goodness she was in the house the whole time. I'm so glad you saw her before you took out walking. I bet you count all three of them from now on every time they come in or out :) Take care. Glad all is well.

Something scary like that happened to me not long ago. Tyson was out in the back yard and I was inside at the door watching him. I turned around to get something to drink and when I came back to the door I couldn't see him. I walked outside and around the backyard. No sign of him. I was terrified. I opened the gate from the back yard and walked into the front yard. Looked down the street, looked across the street... no sign of him. Just as I was about to officially start freaking out, I walked to the front door to go back into the house and there he was sitting outside at the front door waiting for me!!!

Boy Dan, I can relate to that scary feeling!! Just the other day I put both doggies outside...Spirit is tied to a 15ft leash because he climbs fences too! I went to the basement laundry room for about 10min, came back up to let the doggies in. Xena was sitting at the door waiting to be let in...Spirit was nowhere to be seen! My heart did a flip...I saw his leash but it wasn't broken! My first thought was that someone stole him! I went up the driveway..looked up and down the street...called his name (panic in my voice..tears welling up) turned to come in the front door to grab my coat and there he was staring at me through the front window!! He heard me calling him and was wondering what the fuss was about! Turned out my son let him in but Xena wasn't finished her business!! What an awful moment! Was sooo happy to see him! :)
So glad it all turned out good for you and Maggie...give em all a hug from us! :)

I know that feeling all too well - except we actually got in the car and drove around the neighborhood before realizing she had been home the whole time! Thank goodness your precious little Maggie was home safe all along. ~ Cathy

Boy do we know the feeling too! We left both dogs loose in the house one day, just for a short period.. (maybe 30min). and when we came back, there was only one bouncy, beaning boxer to greet us. We called Nikki's name but no Nikki.. we looked outside to see if she had some how gotten out.. didn't see her. At this point, i could only think of horrible things.. someone came in and stole her (probably to be used as a breeding machine..), she got out, and someone found her and kept her, and all other bad thoughts. 20min later, back in the house, we're calling her name, and we hear a soft *woof*. We kept calling her name, and every few "Nikki"s there would be a *Woof*. 10min later, we finally realized that she had somehow locked herself in a roommate's bathroom. (the door is hinged so that it closes automatically). WHEW, a HUGE sigh of relief when we found her. Im glad Maggie is ok :) isn't it funny the look that your boxers give you after you realize everything is fine? like.. "what the heck were you doing dad?" :D

Oh my gosh! I had my heart fall into my stomach yesterday too. It was my own stupidity though that caused it. I was trying to bake a cake...not a good thing for me to try to do let me tell ya =) Well somehow the temp on the oven got turned up to 450 degrees...oh course no one knows how this happened. But all of a sudden we all smell something burning, then all the dang smoke detectors start going off (neighbors are probably saying...Tracy's trying to bake again) so I run to the kitchen door and fling it open...not even thinking about the dog. Our yard is not fenced in and she is not allowed out without her leash. So here I am standing in the door way...fanning out the smoke and Greta is standing there looking at me...looking at me! You would think I would realize open door/dog..not good. But the thought didn't cross my mind for some reason. So she runs out the door. Duh!! It finally hit me that the dog is on the loose and my heart fell. You think of all the awful things that could happen...but thankfully she was safe. After two loops around the house at 100mph she prances up the steps like...gee mom that was fun...lets do it again sometime.

I would have freaked out too! You just never know when and if they will get into trouble. I think they were watching you run around and thinking they were rather clever over it all.

Don't worry Dan I have also called for Heidi when she was inside the house the whole time! Turn around and there she is looking at me like, "What do you want!" It's a scary feeling and then when you realize what you did you just hope nobody saw you calling the dog who's right beside you! :)

OMG Dan, I know how scary that can be! I had a fence built 2 weeks after Daisy came home and the fence company did a HORRIBLE job hanging the gate. (too long of a story, the Better Business Bureau is now involved) I finally paid another contractor to rig the gate up better. Anyway, before it was fixed somehow Daisy got the gate opened and took off. I had no idea until I walked outside to play with her and saw the gate open. It turns out she just ran across the street to play with my neighbors kids but what if.....it's the what if's that get you.

I'm glad everything turned out ok. Guess she's pretty quick, Dan!
