Quitting smoking

I started smoking when I was 13 and quit when I was 31. In the last ten years of it I would hide my habit from the world as best I could...I lied to my husband I lied to my children I lied to my family and the people I worked with. My whole life was geared around sneaking out for that one little smoke...which I managed to do at least 25 times a day.
Out of the blue I picked up a thin little paperback book at Chapters called "Easy Way to Quit Smoking" written by Allen Carr. Smokers....write that down.
In 3 days I was almost done the book and could not wait to be finished because I would get to become a non smoker at the end of it. Haven't looked back since. No pain no withdrawl no bitchies no weight gain no substitutions like the patch ...Nothing!
And no....the book didnt show all kinds of gross testimonials about how smoking kills. Smokers are smokers.....they are not stupid. They know how bad it is to their health. Allen Carr simply shows smokers that they are really not as addicted as badly as they think they are. He removes all the myths around smoking in a very gentle matter of fact way that uses plain common sense. One of the best things? I didnt become one of those nasty abrasive ex smokers who verbally abuses anyone still unfortunate enough to still be smoking.
As for withdrawl, I havent missed a cigarette since day one of becoming a non smoker. In the first couple days it would hit me to light a smoke because that was my habit. I compared it to a person who switches from driving standard to automatic: your left foot reaches for the clutch sometimes. That is not a serious condition requiring drugs and/or patches or gum whatever. It was just my brain remembering that this was a situation where I used to smoke. I have since gone through a marriage separation, lost my job, lost a family member to mental illness yada yada yada...all without once thinking i might need a smoke.
If you pick up the book, read it carefully with an open and hopeful mind. There are no tricks involved, but like anything, you can be skeptical about it. There are people that say "oh you have to really really want to quit to be able to do it without medical help"...that is a load of hooey. Smokers ALL want to quit.
Good luck to all who are going to quit: celebrate! It really is a new life!

I feel your pain. I quit about 1 1/2 years ago. Hubby and I decided it was time. I am still not smoking(unless I have beer, which isnt very often), hubby is still smoking 2 packs per day. I just would not let myself fail. I kept saying to myself,"What, you're not strong enough, you're going to give in to this?" I knew i could do it no matter how miserable I was. I still miss it sometimes, because it was such a part of me as I started at 12. Find your inner strength and don't let yourself down. I also joined a gym so I wouldnt gain weight, because that was my biggest concern. Now, I feel great and it really feels good to not be a slave to something anymore.

I smoked for ten years and I quit one year ago. I was sick of promising my wife I would quit and never doing it. When I did I got Duke for quiting and that is why I am here now. I really did not want to quit even though my grandfather and my uncle both died from smoking. I used wellbutrin to quit and it supresses the craving but does not take it away that would be up to you. I found it alot easier to quit, at the same time working out, because it is killer on your body to work out and smoke. If you really want to quit you can but your husband needs to support you and not smoke around you. If he does and you dont smoke you would have an incredible will power. I wish you all the luck because it is a hard thing to do. I can tell you I have never felt better in my life. I dont cough like I used to which is a good feeling.

I too was a smoker and had tried to quit unsuccessfully many many times.
Finally one day I decided I was going to quit and that was that. I went on the patch which helped immensely. It wasn't easy, but I drank LOTS and LOTS of water. It's supposed to help flush the toxins out of your body (and it also helps from overeating). Also, I chewed on everything from toothpicks to straws to stir sticks.
In order to quit, you really have to WANT it really bad. It doesn't help that your hubby's smoking around you though. Maybe you could convince him to go outside to puff if he won't agree to try and quit with you. Good Luck!! Please keep us posted on your progress I know you can do it!!

I am also a smoker and have finally decided that the pack I have now is the last one I am buying. I have tried Nicatrol Inhaler with Wellbuteron from the doctor and it didn't work so this time I am going to try the NicoDerm CQ patches. I will have my fingers crossed for you and me. WE can do this.

For those of you that want to quit I know you can. Just keep a STRONG will and YOU can do it. I dont want to sound preachy just want to give yall a hope that you can do it.

I smoked for 4 years, quit for 3, and then I just started up again about 6 months ago. I quit cold turkey the first time. THe first 2 weeks were tough, but after that the craving was gone. Basically, I started up again due to stress. Now I just need to set a time for myself when I'm going to quit again. I pray that I can quit cold turkey again:(

Thanks Jess! I know I will quit again soon. I'm not ready yet though:( . Best of luck to you !! That is wonderful that you have been smoke free for 6 months after so many years!! That takes some serious willpower. Keep it up-you can do it:)
