Since there is NO WAY to keep a cat OFF the furniture we thought it only fair to allow everyone in our family (fur or no fur) to relax on the furniture....
I just have to vaccum more than most, and we LIVE with tape rollers in our house! (Thank goodness for the six pack at Costco)
The upside? Nothing like a snuggly head on your lap while reading or watching TV, especially on a snowy night, I use them as foot warmers :D

ooohhh yes....this was a big issue for my husband and I.....we just bought a new sectional....paid a good penny for it, but I love snuggling with my 80lb baby!!....so we comprimised and gave him one end of the sectional and covered it with a blanket just for him....now we have had the couch a few months and he is gradually working his way around the whole thing!!!.....I have to let him up, he is just too precious for me not to!!!

Owen used to be allowed on the sofa, but we left the loveseat and chair off limits so the cat could get away from him. Then he ate a hole in a sofa cusion. He is now allowed on the bed or sofa only with an invitation. (Until I go get some bitter apple spray or something.)

Okay, I have to come clean and post again...after reading the last response (the boxer that ate a hole in the chair), ha!
My furniture is only 3 years old. I find it to be beautiful. It is heavy, comfy, and a beautiful chocolate colored tweed (with light markings of red and green that you really cannot see). It also has some antique brass studs across the top, arms, etc..., sort of deep country furniture. Well...the seams started coming apart. This has/had nothing to do with the dogs. I decided that it was too late to stake a claim of poor manufacturing, so I am living with it. The problem is, the boxers have figured out (mainly Tyra), that they can stick their head in the couch and pull out stuffing. In fact, I'll post the picture to Boxerworld of Tyra and my couch in a few minutes. It looks like she is sitting in a bubble bath on my couch. It isn't bubbles, it's couch stuffing!

Definately on the furniture and in the bed!! Your best bet is leather furniture for the living room. It is easy to clean and durable (stands up well to boxer paws/nails). As for the bed just be sure you are not the last one in or you may not get much space and definately no blankets!! We were originally not going to let the "dog" on the furniture. Then we discovered Boxers and now the furniture/carpet/etc is far less important to us. Change in priorities when you look into those brown eyes.
Of course! Jake "owns" the living room couch, his spot is right in the middle so he can look out the front window. We got a boxer throw blanket from the danbury mint (very nice) that covers almost the whole couch. Forget about the bed, Jake is in the crook of my legs and under the blanket when it's cold.

Absolutely! We have two sets of leather furniture and two sets of fabric and they let US on the couch when they feel like moving - but not until they give the big sigh. LOL The bed too - my husband fought it for a while but lost every time so he finally gave in and last week we had a king sized bed delivered. Now, it's a snuggle Heaven!
