Boxer Pal
This is a little long winded but I wanted to give as much detail as possible.
Last Wednesday I was having dinner and my 10wk old pup (Kaiser, male) laid down to nap beside me. We ate, and he probably layed there for about 10 to 15 minutes. When he got up, he had a limp. I thought it might be because he laid on it wrong-- like how our appendages will 'go to sleep'. But he was limping on it for the rest of the night. The next morning he wouldn't put pressure on it ((back right)) and was very lethargic. He didn't have much of an appetite and just wanted to sleep the entire day. I had to go to work.
Same deal when I got home Thursday, though he ate some dinner but that's it. I figured that if it wasn't resolved on Friday then I would take him to the vet. So Friday came around and when I came home for lunch he was the same. He wouldn't put any weight on it and whimpered when you picked him up wrong, etc.
I took him to the vet. THey thought that it may be fractured since he wasn't putting pressure on it so they x-rayed him. They said he may have sprained it by sleeping on it wrong. (I was wondering if it might be growing pains or something.) They gave him some pain medicine.
Okay, so Saturday rolls around and he's limping but at least he's putting weight on it. Same for Sunday. He was definately alert and we played fairly hard-- like normal.
Monday morning he was scheduled to get his ears cropped. I wanted him feeling a little better before we did it. I was hoping he'd get better, and he seemed happier and healthier. So... Monday morning comes and he wakes up (he sleeps with me) and i pick him up to take him out and he whimpers. Take him out, put him on the ground, and now he's limping on his back LEFT! I'm like.. what the h#^^! So I take him to the vet, tell them the story of the last few days and that he's started to limp on his back left, and leave.
So when I come back in the evening the vet starts talking about his leg and says something about his front right. Turns out he didn't even notice his back left and thought i was talking about his front right because it was swollen nearly twice its normal size.
My GUESS is that since he's been limping, he's putting too much weight on his front legs so it stocked up. Because he doesn't show sensitivity on it or anything.
The pain seems to be on the upper part of his back legs.
SO... when I had to go pick up his wormer from the vet who initially x-rayed him, i told them about the other leg and the swollen leg. The vet called me the next day and says that she might suspect that he has HOD (HYPERTROPHIC OSTEODYSTROPHY) and they want to take more x-rays and look at him.
I'm not sure... on the one hand I feel like they want $$, and that since this happens only when he wakes up from sleeping that he somehow sleeps on it awkwardly (he's a long legged growing pup!) and somehow sprains it. I mean, wouldn't they pick up on something in the x-ray before? They had said they didn't see anything abnormal. From what I read, you will find the condition through x-rays.
I'm just not sure what to do... noone wants to hear that their puppy has a painful problem... but i'm just not totally, intuitively, convinced that he may have HOD.
Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what I should do or what it could be? Should I worry as much as I am?
Thank you,
Alyse & Kaiser.
Kaiser is 11 weeks now. 1/9/09 he weighed 16.3 lbs, 1/16/09 he weighed 17.5 (that was when I took him in for the xray), and on 1/19/09 he weighed 18.2 lbs. That was the day he woke up limping on the back left.
