This is a little long winded but I wanted to give as much detail as possible.

Last Wednesday I was having dinner and my 10wk old pup (Kaiser, male) laid down to nap beside me. We ate, and he probably layed there for about 10 to 15 minutes. When he got up, he had a limp. I thought it might be because he laid on it wrong-- like how our appendages will 'go to sleep'. But he was limping on it for the rest of the night. The next morning he wouldn't put pressure on it ((back right)) and was very lethargic. He didn't have much of an appetite and just wanted to sleep the entire day. I had to go to work.

Same deal when I got home Thursday, though he ate some dinner but that's it. I figured that if it wasn't resolved on Friday then I would take him to the vet. So Friday came around and when I came home for lunch he was the same. He wouldn't put any weight on it and whimpered when you picked him up wrong, etc.

I took him to the vet. THey thought that it may be fractured since he wasn't putting pressure on it so they x-rayed him. They said he may have sprained it by sleeping on it wrong. (I was wondering if it might be growing pains or something.) They gave him some pain medicine.

Okay, so Saturday rolls around and he's limping but at least he's putting weight on it. Same for Sunday. He was definately alert and we played fairly hard-- like normal.

Monday morning he was scheduled to get his ears cropped. I wanted him feeling a little better before we did it. I was hoping he'd get better, and he seemed happier and healthier. So... Monday morning comes and he wakes up (he sleeps with me) and i pick him up to take him out and he whimpers. Take him out, put him on the ground, and now he's limping on his back LEFT! I'm like.. what the h#^^! So I take him to the vet, tell them the story of the last few days and that he's started to limp on his back left, and leave.

So when I come back in the evening the vet starts talking about his leg and says something about his front right. Turns out he didn't even notice his back left and thought i was talking about his front right because it was swollen nearly twice its normal size.

My GUESS is that since he's been limping, he's putting too much weight on his front legs so it stocked up. Because he doesn't show sensitivity on it or anything.

The pain seems to be on the upper part of his back legs.

SO... when I had to go pick up his wormer from the vet who initially x-rayed him, i told them about the other leg and the swollen leg. The vet called me the next day and says that she might suspect that he has HOD (HYPERTROPHIC OSTEODYSTROPHY) and they want to take more x-rays and look at him.

I'm not sure... on the one hand I feel like they want $$, and that since this happens only when he wakes up from sleeping that he somehow sleeps on it awkwardly (he's a long legged growing pup!) and somehow sprains it. I mean, wouldn't they pick up on something in the x-ray before? They had said they didn't see anything abnormal. From what I read, you will find the condition through x-rays.

I'm just not sure what to do... noone wants to hear that their puppy has a painful problem... but i'm just not totally, intuitively, convinced that he may have HOD.

Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what I should do or what it could be? Should I worry as much as I am?

Thank you,
Alyse & Kaiser.

Kaiser is 11 weeks now. 1/9/09 he weighed 16.3 lbs, 1/16/09 he weighed 17.5 (that was when I took him in for the xray), and on 1/19/09 he weighed 18.2 lbs. That was the day he woke up limping on the back left.

very similar

this sounds exactly like what is happening to our bailey girl. She has some swelling on the leg she will not walk on now. And like you described it was literally overnight. I also thought maybe growing pains even though it sounds silly. i will keep you posted on what i find out and you do the same..thanks.

Bailey-- Check out some information on HOD, the more i read, the more i think it might be that... :/ http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1561&aid=446 <-- that was a good article.

I will keep you posted. It seems like HOD is a vet's way of saying its growing pains, haha.. but perhaps a little more severe??

GDogs- thanks! I hope he gets better... he's my first baby... boxer and dog combined!

I hope it is not HOD :( That's a serious disorder - and you should be aware that not all dogs recover. He would be very young for that though.

Causes of HOD are suspected to include nutritional factors though, so if you suspect that, then taking a look at what your puppy is eating is wise. You should take care not to overfeed, and to avoid excesses of things like protein and calcium (especially calcium). If you give any supplements, stop.

:/

I was feeding him Purina Little Bites. Lately he hasn't seemed to like it, so I just (today) switched to IAMS proactive healthy puppy. He ate it all up.

Do you have any suggestions how much I should feed him? I'm feeding him about 3/4 cup/scoop 2 to 3 times a day, depending if he's hungry.

So do you think it might not be HOD? Perhaps he's just growing fast? I'm worried.
From what i've read of HOD, some dogs do just grow out of it... it sounded that it seemed as if it were just dogs that start growing very fast and their joints and bones can't keep up?

I am not feeding him any supplements at all. Thanks for your response

Both foods you mention are extremely low quality. That of itself shouldn't really be a cause of HOD - though it would seem you may be feeding an excess of calories. I'd suggest a better quality food overall, and one that requires a little less food to be fed (i.e. higher quality, more digestible ingredients, but lower overall calories - the pup will get better nutrition from it anyway).

With suspected HOD, I'd also aim for something a little lower in protein - perhaps around the 24% mark (as that's still a possibility in cause). It might not be HOD, and the food might not be the cause - but considering that this is an extremely painful disease that is sometimes (perhaps even frequently) fatal, it makes some sense to address all possible dietary factors as rapidly and effectively as you can. You're right that some pups do recover of course. But some do not (and all suffer a significant amount of pain). So it seems wisest to err very much on the side of caution in this case.

My immediate thought was it sounds like vax reaction. Has he been vaccinated? When? How many times? Which vaccines has he received?

My immediate thought was it sounds like vax reaction. Has he been vaccinated? When? How many times? Which vaccines has he received?

A coworker of mine has a lab that was experiencing extreme symptoms of HOD after every vaccination. The vet ulitmately suggested to discontinue with the vaccinations and hope that she gets better...

At 5 weeks (12/11/08) he was first vaccinated. He was still with the breeder at this point, so i'm not sure if he had any reactions. He was a very lethargic puppy when I went to see him, and before he 'gained his personality'. He got Distemper-Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Canine Parvovirus, Coronavirus.

At 9 weeks (1/9/09) he got them all again.

He is scheduled to get them again in about 3 weeks from now.

These symptoms happened about a week after his 9 week shots.

BUT... as of YESTERDAY, he ISN"T LIMPING! We went for a short walk and he's been playful and happy.. going up stairs, bouncing around, etc. It seems to not bother him now, for now.

I switched to IAMS like three days ago, but i doubt that it had that significant of an effect.

Any thoughts? :)
Thanks again for all your help... and i'll continue to update this because I want this issue figured out!!
