I think tubes would be neccessary in this case... My co worker's son wasn't speaking clearly and getting ear infections every month... She had tubes in and he is a new kid... HE COULDN'T HEAR ANYTHING YOU SAID!... Try to talk them to tubes

Wow..Cathy (((hugs to you & your DD)))!! I am so very happy for your DD that she can hear normally now!! What an ordeal she has been through...geez! Thank you for sharing your experience. I definately believe now that we have an excellent ENT!
I see the frustration in Jessica as well from always having to say "what" or "pardon"...having to have the volume always turned up on everything and her brothers always telling her to "geez Jess, turn it down"..(they can only take so much of "I'm a little teapot" :p ). And I am amazed, and heartbroken at the same time, to see a 4yr old struggle with lip-reading! And just tonight (this happened a couple of times) she sneezed and WOW..her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and said "Mommy..I can hear"!!
Jen...I am hugely anticipating a break sometime soon! God knows we can all use one! :D
daisycrazy...we are going tubes. ;) Looking forward to perfect hearing! :)

I really wish her luck with her surgery as I had a bad experience with tubes and have opted now at my age to not go through with any more surgeries since all they did was botch my ear :(

Sending many vibes and prayers Jessica's way for a smooth operation and many good hearing vibes!

Glad you got answers. My DH had tubes 10 times as a child. Even after all that he hears pretty well now (at least when he wants t).
I am sure Jessica will do fine.

you can buy almond oil over the counter in any chemist this can be put into the ear to soften and remove wax.... my mother used it on me, it's all natural no perfumes or added anythings.... only thing to watch is she doesn't suffer for nut alergies or this is a big no no!!!

hope she gets better soon sending healing vibes.....

Sharon...I was going to check in today and ask how your daughter was getting along. I see in another post that she is scheduled to have tubes put in her ears soon. I wish you all the best with that. My son had that procedure when he was 2 yrs old and it worked out wonderfully for him. The reason you had been on my mind for the last couple of days is that I found out Tuesday that my daughter who is 8 is completely deaf in her right ear. We are scheduled for some further testing at the children's hospital on the 24th. When she was an infant she had severe menengitis due to kidney dysfunction. That is the only thing we can imagine must have happened. She has probably been this way her whole life and we didn't even know it. She wouldn't even know to complain because that's all she's known. NOw that I think about it, it would explain why she is so loud when she talks, plays, sings, etc. There are times DH & I thought she wasn't hearing us but we chalked it up to stubborn kids & their selective hearing, ya know? I just wondered if your daughter had been getting along okay. Geez I don't know whether we need to change the way we do things with her, I don't know if they'll want to try & correct it, if it's even fixable. I feel like you did, with all sorts of questions.

Hi Diane..thanks so much for thinking of Jessica! Like you read in the other thread, she is scheduled for tubes on March 4th, and it cannot arrive soon enough! It really pains me to see her try to read lips or move her hair away from her ear and say "pardon"! Volume on everything is extra loud these days...including her vocal cordes! The ENT says that when she is in recovery and comes out of the anesthetic, she will notice a 100% improvement! I know this is all very common surgery, but I still cannot help but fret at the thought of them wheeling her away to surgery. She doesn't quite understand what's going to happen, and I KNOW she will lose it when she see's the needle to put her under! :( Ahh well...we will both get over it I am sure and best of all...she will hear! :)
I am so very sorry to hear of your daughters hearing loss! You are probably right about it being caused by the menangitis. Does she see an ENT now? Hopefully something can be done to correct it. I have heard others mention (tasillo, for one) cochlear implant. I am not exactly sure how that works, but maybe she will catch this post and offer some advise to you. You are right...soooo many questions and soooo much worry! It really hurts to see your child struggle with something like hearing, and how it can affect their daily life...something we all take for granted. Do not be hard on yourself for not noticing sooner. The only reason I caught on to Jessicas condition was because I had the experience with my oldest son (he's 17 now), only with him it was his adnoids! It is hard to detect and you do believe it's normal "kiddie selective hearing"!
Wishing your daughter all the best with this...she will be in my thoughts and prayers. (((HUGS))) to you too. :) Keep us posted.

You should talk to you doc ahead of time. When my DD had surgery to repair a broken elbow, she broke the tip off of it (yeah-we joke she broker her funny bone! LOL) The day of the surgery, the doc sat down with us and DD to explain what they were going to do. Then, they gave DD a cup of juice - yup you guessed it! it was spiked LOL :D It was just a sedative to calm her down before they went off to do the surgery. Seeing her calm definitely helped me deal with it too!

Hope all goes well, as I'm sure it will. We will all be thinking of ya!

OUCH!! Geez that must have hurt!! And why is it called the funny bone cuz it really hurts like heck just to bang it..let alone break it!! Not very funny at all! :p
I will mention something to the doctor before the surgery...thanks for the tip! And I'll just ask for a shot of whatever it is she's having for myself! ;)
