Well, I took Mugsy to the vets for his shots - he was 9 weeks yesterday. Everything was fine with him. I also left him alone for the first time too. He cried the entire time. I could hear him when I pulled into the garage.

I decided to leave for a little again today. I was gone for about 1/2 an hour. I tried to get him tired out before I put him in the cage. We played for almost 2 1/2 hours before I left. Anyways, I put him in his cage, making sure to put in a bowl of water, one of my shirts, a few safe toys, and 2 treats for him.

He started crying the instant I closed the cage. I didn't make a production out of leaving either. I put him in, grabbed my keys, and left. When I got home 30 minutes later, I heard him crying and howling from the garage (again) and when I came into the house, I found his cage empty. He came running from the living room - crying and whimpering. i instantly took him outside. I didn't fuss over him or anything, which i was told not to do by the vet last night. When we came into the house, I found that he messed in the hallway. I was angry, but it was kinda funny at the same time. When I inspected the cage, the latch was still fastened and the door was still in place. I have no idea how he got out. He's still not doing very well with being alone. I'm hoping that over the next few days, he'll adjust. I start working again next week 6:30-4:15. It will be a long day for him. We are trying to see if someone can stop in to feed him, and let him out of his cage, but so far no luck. My husband doesn't get home until 2, so Mugsy will be crated from 7-2 - kinda long for a puppy. I am concerned since he still isn't handling being alone very well. How long did it take for your boxer to get used to being alone in his crate? It breaks my heart to hear him crying and whimpering, but I figure I better get him used to it now, than throw it all at him next week.

Here is a link I found on the topic of crate training your puppy.

Crate Training

As for how he got out, Clyde is able to push the bottom of the crate door out (leaving all latches intact) and squeeze his body through. If your latch was still secure than my bets are he pulled a "Clydeini" :)

Not for my guys. Chester is the master cage escaper. Just paws his way out everytime.

No cages are not boxer proof. Evander used to be able to get out of his crate and he destroyed 3 of them, so he had to buy one of those crates that is used for airline travel. He seems to like this one better and there's no pan on the bottom for him to push out and destroy. Of course we had to buy a huge size for him to be comfortable in.

As for the whimpering and crying and howling, mine used to do that too, he will get used to being alone eventually. We keep the radio on during the day for him. he likes the noise.

Samson has never escaped from his crate (lucky for us) but he did cry when we first started putting him in it. It used to break my heart to leave him. But it only took him a few weeks to get used to being in there while we were gone. I think that once they realize you are always going to come back, they feel better about going in their crate. We were also very lucky to have family members who came over while we were at work. I hope you are able to find someone who is willing to do the same. I know that used to make me feel less guilty about being gone during the day. Good luck!

Wow-these are some smart pups! Besides gnawing holes to get out, I've never heard of boxers escaping from cages! I guess Baxter never caught wind of that little trick! Smart pooch!

He sounds miserable. Until he is crate trained, being put in the crate will be unbearable for him. They get used to it gradually following the suggestions on the link provided by "Buddy's mom".

And yes, some dogs can unlatch those crates. I had a foster who didn't need crating that let my crate dogs out of their crates!:D Guess he wanted a little company.

My Muggsey used to escape all the time also. We had to go out and buy a small padlock to keep him in. He never liked his crate until we started to give him his Kong when he went in. Whenever we would go to the freezer in the morning to get his Kong, he would run into his crate and wait for his tasty treat. Your baby seems to have a bit of separation anxiety also, so it might take him longer to accept you being out of the house at all.
