Unfortunately, when I got Roxy I couldn't take time off from work so she had to get used to it all at once, poor girl! She did cry maybe for the first 4 or 5 days, might have been a little longer but not much. And it was heartbreaking, such sad little crying. But after no more than a week the neighbors were reporting that they heard not a peep from her (although someone tried to blame her for the neurotic Shih-Tsu upstairs barking all the time!)She still doesn't *love* her crate but she'll go in willingly enough(especially for a kong full of peanut butter!) and she doesn't cry anymore. I think if you just give your baby time and keep doing what you're doing since you have the time he'll get used to it. I don't have any solutions for the escaping though. Good luck with that!

My boxer lady can escape from a lg wire dog crate in 5minutes flat and she is really proud of it too. She uses her tongue to flip the latch up and then uses her front fang to lift the locking metal hooks up and she is out!!!!!! One time we came home and a whole pkg of fresh buns disappeared of the counter her cage was undone but she was sleeping it. Pretending that she did not do anything. We found buns in boots in the hall closest and in the dirty clothes basket. She is such a ham!!!:D

My Boxer and his cage

My 8 month old boxer is on the verge of getting out of the cage, although i am a stay at home wife, at times i still have to go out and the last few times I have gone out his cage has been bent in to the point of him almost getting out, we bend it back every time but I think the next time he will most likely get out, amazing how strong they are.

Be careful!!

Our breeders told us about a dog they knew that did some serious damage to its back. It tried to squeeze it's way out but got stuck. The poor thing was in there for a few hours trying to wiggle free. I would go out and buy some snap locks to put at the top and bottom of the crate so the door can't be pushed open.

Vegas has been crate free since he figured out how to open his lock. We went out one night when he was about 6 months old. We came back to find him sitting at the door waiting for us.

And yes, some dogs can unlatch those crates. I had a foster who didn't need crating that let me crate dogs out of their crates!Guess he wanted a little company

our breeder has one of those too. Whenever they go out for too long, one of the girls opens her crate then lets the others out too. It is her way of getting back at them for leaving them alone too long.

We had to resort to using a bunji cord as extra protection on the front of our cage. Once when we came home Basil had herself wrapped in the patio blind cord. If we would have been gone longer I think that she could have strangled herself. We believe that she was so little that she squeezed through.
