Maggie, whom I adopted recently is a leaky dog. The first time I noticed it was when she was asleep and there was a small puddle of pee from her "you know where". At first I thought it was just her being lazy and I was quite crossed. A few days later, I saw her with a full sized puddle and I got really mad. I found out later that some female dogs that get spayed do exhibit this problem. I was told to get some estrogen from the vet and that will help the situation.

Has anyone encountered this problem with their dogs and if there are any suggestions that can help Maggie?

Thanks
Miki

I would have the vet check her out just to make sure it isn't a urinary tract infection or something like that. My lab mix is on Proin twice a day for spay incontinence and it works great for us, we haven't had any more problems. Good luck!

Layla had this problem only once, where she leaked while in bed with me at night. Totally freaked me out, because I had NO idea what was going on! I'd go see the vet and see what they can suggest for you. Good luck.

Mikimoto, I would like to know if you ever found out why your dog was leaking. My female has been leaking for about a month now. I just kept thinking that I was being lazy and not getting her out enough. Tonight I saw her walking on the tile and there were drops coming off of her. I traced the drops back to a puddle. She only leaks when she is sleeping. I will do anything for my boxers, so I will end up taking her to the vet anyway, but I would like to know what ended up happening with your dog.

Thanks so much,

Derek

There's a holistic treatment that many people swear by - I posed this question recently on the showboxer thread and got lots of testamonials to this approach:

1-2 teaspoons/tablespoons day of fresh chopped parsley with their food.

Period.

Seriously -- you can blend up a ton of it and freeze it in smaller portions to defrost once or twice a week.

Some people eventually weaned their bitches off it, some kept them on it for life. You can discuss with your vet but most of these folks reported that their vets may not have believed it would help, but stated it couldn't hurt.

One brave woman admitted it helped her with her own personal similar issue :)

I'd certainly give it a try before going to hormones. However, before starting anything I'd rule out a urinary tract infection -- run a urine sample, as this is still the most common reason for an accident, and not something you want to overlook as they can be quite painful.

Not to alarm anyone, but I just want you to be cautious when you take your leaky boxer to the vet. Ensure that the proper testing is done (full body panel). My leaky boxer was initially diagnosed with spay incontinence, she drank water like crazy and went like crazy too but only when she was sleeping. At first it seemed the meds worked for a bit but then things just got worse for her. Turns out she had Chronic Renal Failure, hence the exessive drinking and urination. I just assumed my first vet knew what she was talking about. After speaking with another, she suggested the testing to see what else might be up.

Dribbling Boxer

Our 2 yr. old boxer has been dribbling for several months. They say it is a result of having him neutered but it should rarely happen in males, usually only happens in females. Sparky has been on proin 150 mg a day and it is not helping. Is your boxer neutered. I am curious also. We are taking him in for a testosterone shot on Tuesday. If he stops dribbling which means it is working then we will have to take him in every 4 to 6 weeks for a shot. If it doesn't help then it is obviously something else. When we first took him in 2.5 mos. ago they took a urine sample by using the capilator (spelling) and he had lots of bacteria in his urine. We put him on Baytril and the bacteria is now gone but is still leaking. Let me know if you find anything else out. I have been feeling sorry for my boxer so much. I love that little booger.

i have a dog with this problem... she is on medication. she has to take 1/2 a pill 2x's a day. the vet says it happens in 1 out of 100 female dogs after they are spayed. somthing happens during the surgery and makes the bladder sphincter weaker, which causes the leaking. your dog doesnt know that she is doing it. i am not sure of the name of the pills. this medication is called phenylpropanolamine. http://wedgewoodpharmacy.com/phenylpropanolamine.asp this website explains the drug a bit. hope this info helps you out...
