Ok, so Mac and I were in Petsmart a couple of days ago for about 15 minwutes! While we were there 3, THREE, separate people said that Mac was a pit. One started talking about her pitbull, and how great dogs they were, and I said, Oh he's a Boxer. And she said, yeah these pits are great..." (i guess she wasn't listening :( ) Then someone asked if he was a pitbull, and I said no, and she said well, he looks like one. OK, sure.

Then the funniest. A lady comes up and says "He is just the cutest, sweetest pitbull I have EVER seen" I said (at this point a lwittle frustrated) "That's because he's a boxer" smashicon She said Oh, well he makes me smile, which was sweet.

Anyway, none of it really bothered me, I just don't get it. I dwon't think he looks like a pit bull. But some of these people were going to argue about his breed. I SAW his parent! He is a boxer.

This has happened before, but never so many times. Just thought it was funny.

We are always being ask if ours are Pitbull Boxers
I say NO they are purebred boxers and that gets followed up by "yes thats what I meant a purebred Pitbull Boxer". When I go on to say there is no such thing they'll say "Yes there is my friend has one."
Just like the case of the standard vs miniature boxer thing I guess.
Well then I guess it must be true, there must really be a new breed.....Right!
Why do people think they know more about my dogs than I do?? I understand I don't know everything about every breed but when I ask someone what kind of dog theirs is I don't second guess them either.
I don't get mad anymore just frustrated.;)

The funny thing is, boxers and pit bulls don't look much alike. Pits are stockier, their ears hand a different way, their muzzle is much larger... I could go on, but I won't. I guess to the general public all protective breeds are pit bulls.

I know it gets irratating after a while. We used to get it all the time with our last boxer who was a brindle, everyone thought he was a PB. And now our white boxer is always mistaken for an American Bulldog, and ocassionaly a pit, it drives me nuts smashicon

Something we seem to get a lot is "he's so cute, he's Boxer and what?" *Just* boxer, I say. . .or "boxer and boxer"! :D

I have a theory

Here's my theory..... and I may get 40 lashings with a wet noodle from a few people, but here goes anyway. There are so many dogs of every breed who come from poor breeding, (BYB, mills etc) that in the general public eye... they become the new standard. I have seen pits that do look similar to Boxers, and my mother has a Boston Terrier, (she has a "bad" head) and the dog looks like a pit puppy! So that's my theory.

We have a lady in the neighborhood who will NOT walk by our house if Rocky is outside. She yells that she will call the police if I don't put him in the house "Because she knows what type of dog he is" I asked her the second time this happened and guess what her response was??

I've asked if she doesn't realize the difference in the two, to please walk on the other side of the street if we are out!!smashicon :p

We get the same thing with Oscar all the time too. The saddest thing is when people practically run to get away from us. I feel so bad because he's not doing anything to even warrant this behavior. :( We've even been chewed out by a guy because of our "Pit" when Steve and I were walking him on a trail (dog friendly) at our local state park. We explained Oscar is a Boxer and were pretty much told we had no clue what we were talking about. Guess Oscar was rather threatening in his sit/stay position next to his daddy and minding his own business. ::rolleyes:

With Oscar, I really think it's because of his Brindle coloring (not to mention the plain ole ignorance of a lot the human race). :D

LOL, I've had a few people ask what sort of dog mine are. Never had anyone imagine that they're pits, maybe 'cause there aren't very many in NZ. Actually, come to think of it, no-one has ever suggested what breed they think they might be...

I even had one guy who was sure they couldn't be purebred boxers because they've got white markings - and "boxers don't, you know, so they can't be purebred"
