Do you call Child Protective Services and let them assess their situation or do you do nothing and hope everything turns out all right. Because if they find out you called CPS on them you will probably lose a friend and if you don’t how can you look them in the eye the same way again. I don’t envy your decision.

In response to Coveyjt. My parents started taking in Foster Children when I was 2 years old. I have seen all types of abuse and I am sorry, this is not a tough decision to make. These kids need to be protected. If you lose friends, so what. Worrying about ones self over the welfare of children is just selfish. This is not even considering the welfare of the poor animals in this garbage dump. The heck with looking them in the eye, how could you look yourself in the mirror if you would even consider letting this abuse endure?

Let's see, the dogs were responsible for the garbage on the table and the counter. The dogs were also responsible for the dirty dishes, candy wrappers and all the other trash around the house.

The dogs left the dirty dishes in the sink and on the table. I know some people who have a house like the one you described. I'm going to suggest they get a dog(s) so they'll have someone to blame for the mess.

I'm sorry, but most of the debris you mentioned was left behind by humans, not the dogs. I'll bet even the dogs are disgusted.

That's disgusting smashicon How hard is it to take out the trash? Nobody human or animal should live like that. Please call CPS and the Humane Society.

That is disgusting. They are just lazy pigs. Do they know how to pick-up after themselves? I guess not. NO child should have to live in those conditons.

Sharon - in Boston we have a law against that - it's called "Keeping a house of squalor." Depending on how bad it is (and this sounds bad) the officers would issue a citation and check back to see if the place has been cleaned. Except when children or animals are involved they go right in and clear the place out. Officers, animal control and several other city departments go in, take the animals to the shelter and the children go to protective custody till the parents are evaluated. I would not hesitate to contact the police department and they will advise you who to contact if it isn't them. There is definitely mental illness with these parents. They are exposing their children and pets to all types of bacteria that could kill them. Make the phone call and don't look back.

I agree! Lazy was just what I was thinking. I have taken a mandatory child abuse class. Depending on the degree of filth and if the children were being taken care of would be the main concern. I'm sure laws differ from state to state.

When you visited was there any place to sit that you felt comfortable? I've known of some people that aren't very clean and I just couldn't stand to be in their home for very long. There is a difference between clutter and filth.

Sounds like some mental conditions going on at that house. Yes, there is a bell curve of "tidiness" and sometimes I'm closer to one end than the other, but filth like that doesn't fall under the definition of normalcy. Something like that could actually be considered a public health hazard - I mean it could draw rodents and cockroaches that could affect the neighbors' living conditions. And it's really only fair to blame your flatulence on the dog actually, not dirty dishes and the trash...;)

OMG! You just described MY house, before we bought it! Literally food trash, bones etc on the living room carpet. The smell and filth was insane! They were tenants and the owner was in shock when we all walked in to look at it! The people were told in advance that we were coming!! And there were only two adults and 2 kids with ONE cat! Cat poop was piled up in the corners of each room.
We hired a commercial cleaning company (who also cleans crime scenes) to come and clean before we would even touch a thing to remove it. We literally replaced everything. Even the subfloors. Every fixture from toilets to lights. We just had walls left when we were done. The shower, I smashed out the tub and tile. I couldn't imagine showering in there!
Amazing how some people will live.
I agree, if they choose to "give up" on basic health issues, they don't deserve pets OR children!
