I crop all of my guys and love the look of the cropped boxer. I have no problem with folks that don't want to crop. I give new owners the choice when they buy their pups. No problem--personal choice. I do keep all of the pups during their crop and until the sutures are removed. The pups are all together the night of their crop -- eating, playing and sleeping, just like the day before. Is it pain free? I am not going to say yes, but it is not the painful experience that some people imagine. Yes, there is very important aftercare. It can be very easy and only require a few tapings, but most require more. Some may take six or more months. They are in the minority, but you never know ahead of time. An ear with thick heavy leather will take more tapings.
As for vets and learning to crop in school. It has never been taught. I mark my pups ears. I had vets asking me to teach them how to do a nice crop over 25 years ago. These vets wanted to do a pleasing job and had not had any courses in school. Many vets choose not to crop for various reasons. Many do not believe in it and many have no artistic talent and can accept that. Too many crop and do a terrible job and know nothing about aftercare or taping. These are the vets that cause all of the horror stories and very painful experiences we have all heard. I have assisted people when their pup has problems from improper taping or vets who say after one or two tapings, the ears will never stand. It is all in knowing what you are doing.
So, yes, cropping is a choice. I like the look of the cropped dog. I love to rub their silky ears and it is one of their favorite lovings.
