I am so proud of both this question and the very mature responses everyone has given. This topic comes up often and can sometimes turn ugly. You guys are great cool2icon

You will find tons of answers on here but it will be you in the end that will be taping and taping and oh yeah taping some more..lol It can be a bit intimidating the first time around.
We had dobermans before cropped and one ear stood and one didnt. B/c the vet we used cut them too short. So basically ask around for a vet that does cropping and ask them to see their portfolio. usually they will set up a meeting and look at the pups ears feel them and then be able to tell you if you can do a pet crop or a show crop. Pet crops stand sooner b/c they are a bit shorter. The lazer crop has a faster healing time and is supposed to be less pain. More expensive but if done by the right vet they are great looking. We went natural with our girl. Her ears perk up sometimes and lay flat sometimes. We never taped them though. I love her ears she has so much expression in them. With that being said my next pup will be cropped b/c it will be a show pup.

(i guess my main question is: How painful is it really? will she suffer horribly? will it traumatise her forever?)

I really cant answer how painful the regular crop is. With our dobies they went in the morning for the crop and by mid afternoon were waking up and ready to go home that night. The female didnt have any pain after surgery she was back to herself when we brought her home they gave her some pain meds. The male had a reaction to the anesthia and started peeing all over the place and acted as he was in pain. no meds with his.(two different vets) We gave him some baby asprin and he seemed better. He was a bit older then the female when he had them done. his ears took all of two weeks to stand beautifully. hers we taped until she was 7 months and one never stood.

Good luck with your decision it is a very tuff one.

I used to think I did not like the big floppy ears. I was so glad the natural eared Boxers we had were all so perfect. Then came Ava. She is the "Dumbo" of the Boxer world. God do I love her ears. She can give you such expressive looks.
I am sure you will be happy with whatever you decide.
I would research the vet and I have heard many positve things on laser surgery.
Best of luck with your new baby.

Ava is the check list of everything I thought I didn't want. God was I blind.:D smashicon

kneesaa has her ears cropped... i really looked into it before i had it done...and everything that went along with the cropping... i asked around and found a wonderful vet who did an AWESOME job... i actually didn't have to tape them at all once the stitches were taken out... but that is very rare
as for the different type of cuts:
there is the short cut (very short crop near the head)
the long cut: see pictures of kneesaa in my gallery...thats what she has
and the show cut: which is a very long cut and the ears stand much higher...
just make sure to do alot of research before hand, and if you can ask around and make sure you find a vet with alot of experience and one that knows exactly what each cut is and how to treat them afterwards
also as for pain...kneesaa was running around normal after the operation..she stayed overnight...but the next day she was fine...
the vet gave me pain killers and antibiotics...i actually only gave her the pain killers the first day...b/c they seemed to dope her up so much
but all in all im very pleased with her ears...good luck! :D

I can't imagine my beautiful baby with cropped ears. What would I rub when I'm stressed. And boy are they soft.. The give her such a good look. A lot of folks are going with natural ears nowadays.

Booker T loves me to rub his cropped ears. He will fall asleep it feels so good.

do you have to worry about the cartalidge breaking and recking the crop? like if they hurt there ear later down the road or anything. i am asking cuz my friends shepards ear drooped after she got a tatoo and never went back up properly... do you have to worry about the same thing with cropped ears.

can you still touch them and stuff like when you are petting them can you rub their ears? or would you have to worry about breaking the cartalidge and having the ear fall.

i like the crop that is i think called the pet crop. i dont like the ones close to the head like you see in pit bulls alot, i think it looks horrible. and i would not want the really tall and thin crop (show crop).

im still not 100% on it or not... jerry wants to do it but i have the final say. does anyone know of any vets that do this in BC? and how much does it cost apr?

What exactly are "flying nun" ears? I am positive Eva has them and I love her ears! (I would post a pic so that someone could tell me but everytime I try to post, I have trouble with the size.)
Thanks,
Monica
