Maybe im alone on this one but i cannot see why anyone would want to crop a dogs ears!
Whats wrong with leaving them how they are NATURAL .
And how much pain and suffering the poor fellows have to go through for the sake of a cosmetic alteration. If they were supposed to have pointy ears they would have been born with them.

Enough said!!

I had though a lot about cropping Igor's ears. Then, I was thinking, what if the vet is not a good one for that? And has Igor is a european boxer, how the vet could have any experience in european crop? And what if they don't stand? I went to a show latetly were a lot of dob had show crop that won't stand... And my friend who has a doberman told me about when her girl had stay too long in the sun and the tape had melt and it did a big infection, they had to asthesied her to get it off... No, definatly, I couldn't do that, so my boy is a nice one with natural ears! But I really like when ears fall well with the correct fold, so I massage them and tape them.

first of all if the sun melted tape on crooped ears that poor dob was in the sun too long he's lucky to be alive.....as far as a bad crop job is does happen thats why you need to find a vet who is good at it and also do all the care after.

By the way, she's a very well cared for dob, it's just that nobody had told her for the sun and she didn't think about it...

Here, crop and docking is no more teach in veterinary school, old vets are teaching it to new vets if they are searching for it, so experience vet for cropping are very rare...

And cropped ears are silky too :)

I always rub Daisy's ears (JoJo's are still in the process of being taped so I don't get to rub them too much:) ) and she loves it. They are so soft and silky!

No, no ann, don't worry, it's just that your message made me think that what I wrote could be misinterpreted...:o

She's a very nice and successful show dog today, with beautiful well standing ears.

What does it take to change breed standards so that show boxers could have either type of ears and are judged on their own merit, either cropped or natural?

There is controversy over the ear cropping, but I've never seen the same type of discussion over tail docking. Dewclaw removal I see as a measure to prevent injury, but what about the tails? I will admit, as much as I don't like the cropped ears, I like the docked tails. I've seen some pics of natural tails on boxers and they look funny to me.

What is the history behind the ear croping and tail docking practices?

Probably for the look, but boxers ancestors were doing bull baiting no? So it must be for their safety, to avoid being hurt to the tail and ears, two fragile and easily accessible parts (do I have to tell you that bach then, it was not long show crop as today?;) ). After, maybe they kept it for the look, or maybe they though it was more pratical for army dogs...

I know that some for a lot of terrier, the tail was crop to 1/3 to allowed the hunters to get the dog out of a tunnel by the tail and avoiding breaking the fragile extremity.
