You could check around here on BW to find many stories of dogs getting hurt, choked, hung up on something, etc. Just recently I was reading about two Boxers playing and one had its mouth caught on the other's collar and choked the other to the point of passing out before the owner was able to cut the collar with scissors! I do not risk it.

That may be referring to what happened to my 2 outside. I have since found a collar that is designed to snap off if they get it caught on something, like another dog or a fence. Both still don't wear their collars outside, but we are out there with them. Believe me, better safe than sorry. After taking them to the emergency vet after the incident and worrying about crushed windpipes and damaged eyes, and $200 vet bill, I now make sure they are as safe as can be.
It's also a treat for them to put their collars on since they know it means a walk and going somewhere. Added bonus.

Mine have them on during the day and at night they are off. I keep them on because I recently found a dog almost dead in the street and found out how important it is to make sure someone could identify my babies right away even on weekends. The dog almost died before i could find her owners and i couldn't find a vet to help on a Sunday night. I put collars on every morning and at night before bedtime they come off

I have one

I have a microchip in all the dogs, but if someone finds them they won't know it till they take the dog to the pound or their vet. I always left their collars off because I figured they were microchipped so it was all right, but that dog I found it didn't matter as it was Sunday night and no vets were open except emergency and they don't take dogs that don't have owners and I couldn't get a dog pound open and the police said they would take the dog and put her in their impound yard (not a nice place) till morning. No one was around to check for microchips right away. I have the collars on so if they get out and something like that happens to them their collars have information to get in touch with me so I can get them and take care of them right away. Believe me my dogs were microchipped as soon as it came out.

Seems like a catch 22 if you have them on they can cause injuries and death but if not you never know when they could get out accidently and you could lose your baby that way.

Rocky only wears his when we go somewhere. He hates to wear it and keeps scratching at to get it off. I get nervous if we are away from home and he doesn't have it on. Sometimes if we go to my parent's house or my in-laws, my husband will take it off of him and i get so mad because we are away from home and what if he gets out!

Astro has his coller on when we are home. He kennels while we are at work and does not have a coller on.

Wow you got many responses to your question. Molly has her collar on at all times. She has a collar that will break away. I tried to take it off at nights but she gets all weird about it. She will sniff like crazy at the collar and will actually pick it up with her mouth. She doesn't like to be with out her "necklace".

Wow!

WOW! Thank you everyone for all your input. I have been thinking about microchipping. My dogs always have their collars on when we go outside and sometimes in the house (but mostly not). Thank goodness they don't try to bolt out the door when someone opens it. I think I'll error on the side of caution and not have them collared in the house. Roxy has a beautiful braided collar, but it would be easy to get a tooth stuck in there when playing with Buster. He has a snap off collar, hers is belted, but kind of large so I need to get her a new one. Thank you all for your input!

We only put Cash's on when we go out. He never has it on when we are at home. He stays inside when we goto work and our backyard is secure so I am not worried about him getting out and not having his tags on
