Beau only wears his collar when we go for a walk, ride, etc. He never wears it around the house or in the backyard. When he wore it 24/7 he got several things caught on it. After he drug my wicker chair down the hall in a panic before I could grab him I made the decision to let him go without it. I was worried about him escaping and not having a collar on but I guess that's a chance I'll take. He is microchipped so that gives me a little peace of mind. I also think if he hasn't figured out how to escape by now he won't :)

Brutus wears his collar all the time. We have a 3 lvl townhouse and I need to hear him jingle when we are downstairs etc. He also freeks out when we take it off of him to either replace a tag or to take a bath. He love his collar and will stalk you until you put it back on him.

Yep Dakota is the same way.

Jagers Mommy

Boxer Buddy
I leave Jager's on at all times. He wears a well fitting buckle collar . . . I would never suggest leaving a choke collar on unattended, THAT'S scary! But Jager must still stay in the crate for bed, and while we're at work, but I don't worry about that. He's so used to his collar on, and when we take it off for a bath it's hard to get it back on! He tries to play with it. . . so I couldn't imagine having to do that everytime he had to potty! But it definately depends on the collar, and the dog. Good luck with your decision!!

I feel a need to add that if you're talking about a young puppy who is likely to bolt out of any open door, it is probably a good idea to leave it on all the time except for in the crate. You wouldn't want your baby to escape and run, and then him not have any kind of id on him...

Lola's mum

Boxer Insane
My three used to wear them 24/7 until Zeb got his teeth stuck on Lola's collar one day. I freaked and burst into tears because if they were alone he woldn't have been able to un hook himself so they only wear them now while out on walks.

Mine wear their collars ONLY when we go somewhere. Even if we are away somewhere with the dogs, their collars come off before they are allowed to get out of the car when we get home as I know they will be running around the yard playing as soon as their feet touch the ground. There are too many things for collars to get caught on...each other's teeth, fence, tags get caught in heat register, etc. Not worth it.

Aasha

Boxer Insane
Aasha wears his collar all the time. This is so in case he gets out some how, he will have his info on him so someone can call if they find him. Why don't you and your husband compromise and get a collar that has the saftey buckel on it. This way dog will have his collar on all the time but still safe in case of any hang ups!

UmmasMom

Boxer Buddy
Umma wears her collar only when we go for walks. I think she is more comfortable without it. And some time ago her teeth got stuck in another dogs collar while playing. We could free her before any damage was done, because we were outside with the dogs. But what if she gets stuck in something when we are not home?

Collar Question

Both Meg and Sam wear their collars at all times. In the UK it is a requirement in the UK and must have contact details as well. Never had any problems - the only one is that Sam uses the collar to shake Meg!
