I have always kept collars on my dogs at all times and never had a problem. They are never outside without supervision but if they would somehow get away, they have their license and rabies tag on so identification.

You could check around here on BW to find many stories of dogs getting hurt, choked, hung up on something, etc. Just recently I was reading about two Boxers playing and one had its mouth caught on the other's collar and choked the other to the point of passing out before the owner was able to cut the collar with scissors! I do not risk it. Cooper's collar always comes off before going in his crate or playing with other dogs. He usually just wears it when we are out walking or going places.

I second you doing a search here - there have been many frightening experiences with collars. Personally, I don't risk it either, the only time my two wear their collars is if they were out and about. In fact, I even stopped letting them wear them at the dog park. A couple of months ago one dog got his mouth caught on anothers collar - the dog that was caught was being dragged and bitten, then three other people got severely bitten by trying to free the poor thing - it was very traumatic.

My next dooor neighbors had this same experience.. except with a more tragic ending.. Her 2 dogs were playing in the back yard (not Boxers) 2 goldens When all of a sudden we heard this awful sound of a dog being hurt we rushed out side only to witness the older one a female some how got the males collar stuck around her bottom jaw and the panic began although the male golden was much bigger in size then the female and only 1 year old at the time but his size didn't matter the female was totally freaked out and drug him and twisted the collar so tight around her jaw that she strangled him to death, right in front of us before the owners who were franticlly tryung to cut it off it were able to get it off it was a buckle collar and not the quick release plastic type closure. when they finally got it cut off their babie boy was limp but they raced him to the Vet any ways and it was sadly too late.. That memory sticks in my head as I watched it all happen from my back yard, so I don't leave collars on in the house either.. I don't know if the quick release would of had a different outcome or not .. But ever since I have never bought a buckel collar.. I agree it is a personel choice like K8ie says You can read many post that have no problems.. and some of the not so good stories.. My problem is My memory & how awful that freak accident was.. I'm a big worry wart any way good luck

I think I'm right

Wow! Thanks so much to everyone who replied. I think I'll just put them on when we go someplace or for walks of course. I did read the post about the one dog getting caught on the others collar and choking him. I had forgotten about that. I just don't think it is worth the chance of something bad happening to one of them. I think I'm right on this one!

collars only outside under supervision

Snatch's jaw got stuck in our friend's boxer "Bosco".. it was horrific... the more they panis, the more it gets stuck... really, we don't risk it anymore!!!

Sounds like the issue is more at playtime than anything else... Does anyone use those quick release collars? I never have but this thread really makes you wonder if you should...

Rocco and Dino never have their collars on when they're in the house. I think my husband started that. He thinks they're more comfortable without them! They do most of their rough playing outside and we've never had a problem with either of them getting hurt. But I can see where it would be possible.

Brutus wears his collar all the time. We have a 3 lvl townhouse and I need to hear him jingle when we are downstairs etc. He also freeks out when we take it off of him to either replace a tag or to take a bath. He love his collar and will stalk you until you put it back on him.

Ours only wear them when we're going someplace. Havoc got stuck in his crate one time by his collar, we had just gotten home with dinner sat down at the table, Havoc's crate is next to the table so he went to lie down while we were eatting (he always has to be as close as possible!!), and he started flailing around suddenly, we realized what had happened and freed him immediately, but it was still scary... We never leave them in their crates with their collars, but now we are extra extra extra vigilant about making sure their collars are off...

Punchie does not wear her collar inside at our house. We keep it attached to the leash and put both on at same time when it's time to go outside. However, she wears one all the time at my parent's house where she stays during the day. The reason for that is my parents have lots of land and the dogs are pretty much free to go in and out as they please, and I wouldn't want her getting outside without one on, so the rule is she keeps it on all the time when she's there.
