Thank You for the site , I called the cardiologist in portland and they said to take sabastian back to the vet for another look at and they will refer me to the cardiologist if it's nesassary. They are the only cardiologists in the state of Oregon. Over the weekend sabastian was doing his panting hard and walking around really fast like he was gona collapse again. But he never did collapse. He is Drinking water like it's going out of style. So far he is fine today. Someone suggested I give him an aspiren. Will that work on him if it's a heart problem like for humans. I don't want to do anything thats going to hurt him. I think it's senseless to take him back to the vets if he doesn't know what's wrong with him. I'm thinking about checking on another vet in the area. It's a vet hospital, maybe they'd know. Any more idea's is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all of you who replied.!! God Bless!!!!

I would find a new vet and ASK to be referred to a cardiologist! Also, watch him & make sure he is peeing ok, if he has problems again you may want to get his urine checked for stones, or kidney problems.

Look at his gums when you think he is having an episode, they should be pink & not pale or grey at all. When my Britnee was really sick her gums were greyish white and her temp was low, and it had to do with her heart.

Wishing you lots of luck!

I probably would not give the aspirin. The two heart problems boxers are prone to, aspirin would not help. I would TELL your vet you WANT a referral to the cardiologist ASAP!!!! If they feel you do not need to see one then I would find another vet who will give you the referral. If it is boxer cardiomyopathy then there are drugs he should be on that could help him. I would diffently make sure you see a cardiologist esp. because he is still panting hard and acting like he is going to collapse!!!! Good Luck with your baby!!!! Please keep us updated on him, we will keep him in our thoughts and prayers!!!!!

Thank you all, I talked to the vet hospital and they said they have the stuff to check his heart, like x-rays and also suggested getting a heart worm test done. I called my vet to see if they checked for that when sabastian was there and they said no. So he has an appointment wed. morn for a heartworm test. I didn't think heartworms went around in the winter. Sabastian is never around any other dogs. accept outdoor cats and a skunk that hangs around. Can cats and skunks carry heartworms? I'm gona talk to my hubby when he gets home and see if he wants to take him to the other vets for a heart checkup and x-rays and maybe they'll give us a referrel. This I know is gonna be very expensive. Maybe I shoulda gotten pet insurance before all this started. But I guess I thought nothing would ever happen to my buddy! Can I get pet insurance with pre existing conditions? And where do I look? You all are Great!!!!!!:)

Hope Sebastian is doing better. But just a note, heartworm is transferred by mosquitos not other animals. A mossie bites an infected animal and then bites your dog and thats how they catch it. A dog with heartworm can live with another dog and not transfer it without the help of a mosquito.

I've heard that blood sugar levels can effect dogs and make them pass out. My breeder said she has seen dogs running around and then just pass out. I think she said that it was their levels dropping though I not sure. Just something to think about seeing you said the blood sugar level was not normal.

Goodluck ~Amanda.

If Sebastian has yearly or twice yearly HW tests then it's not heartworms I would say. A dog would have to have heartworms longer than a few months to cause drastic problems.

I would still push for the heart tests if that's your vet's only new suggestion.

Good luck!!!!

Unfortunatly insurance's will not cover any pre-existing condition. Also, most of them will not cover anything that is considered hereditary so a heart problem like A.S or BCM would not be covered anyway. I have had a HORRIBLE experiance with Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), I tell everyone I can to NOT use them.

Amanda was right about heartworm. It is only passed by an infected mosquito. It is not contagious to anyone/anything. It can take awhile before infected dogs actually show signs that would alert the owner somthing is wrong.

On a side note, did the vet do any x-rays of his chest? If she did and you go to another vet for a second opinion then you can take those x-rays with you to show the other doctor, this would save you $ so they do not have to retake them. If your vet did any type of work-up at all like urinaylis etc. I would get a copy of those to take to the other vet. I know you really like your vet but your baby is not getting better and your vet doesn't seem to have any answers for you. You may end up wasting more money there before she finally say's, I don't know go see someone else.

Thats to bad on the Insurance, my friends say they know some people that help financially when your pet is sick like this. I haven't heard anything back on it so I'm not sure how true it is. My vet did no testing on sabastian other than a Blood Panel. Why he didn't do anything else I have no idea. He didn't ask if he was up to date on his shots or nothing. It's been two years since sabastian seen this vet. This vet did the emergency neutering on sabastian and did a quik fine job of it. Sabastians Testical up inside was wrapped around his Intestine cutting off his blood supply. He was home the next day bouncing around and ready to go and run and play. (no we didn't let him.:) ) Everyone in the valley swears by this vet, but the problem is I think he is taking on way to much. Everyone around here goes to him and everytime were there he is just swamped. There is supposed to be another vet in their with him but I've yet to ever see him or her! My Husband wants to wait till wed. morn to have sabastian checked for heartworms and if it comes back that he doesn't have that then we'll go from there. Sabastian was fine all day yesterday. acted like his normal self. I hope it stays that way.

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes. Please check out this website www.heartwormsociety.org. It is very important that everyone is educated on preventing HW.

I do hope that this new vet will figure out what is wrong with Sabastian. FYI, you can give him aspirin in the meantime. It will not hurt him and it does have the same effect as humans. Just make sure it is coated so it will be less likely to bother his stomach.
