the spelling of certain words

I always know that a poster is NOT from the USA if they spell it colour instead of color (the way we do), or favorite is our way and favourite is the other (i slaughtered that but you know what I mean), yogurt here yougurt there..ther are a few more that put up the "not from the States" alarm for me..ohh cheque and check. Wow we Americans not only trashed the Kings English but we killed the spelling too!!

You know now that you mentioned that I see what you mean. I spell some words differently - like you said favourite versus favorite. Well, if you heard how fast we speak here in Newfoundland you'd get a charge from it. A lot of people who visit us have trouble understanding us. Oh, well, it's all a part of who we are I guess.

its the "whilst" and "amongst" that I love! I shudder at the way we "Yanks" have taken such liberties with the lovely English language sometimes! I must say, I am fond of spelling my "color" as "colour" and "yogurt" as "yougurt", etc--but maybe living overseas as done that to me...maybe I'll copy Madonna and affect myself a right British accent! LOL Ihave to say I have always loved some of the expressions and phrases my British friends use, as well as some of the ones I see from the the BW members from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada too!!

BTW, how do YOU pronounce Newfoundland? We say New fun lund, do you say new found land? Just curious. I love "meeting" people from places other than the USA and asking ?'s about their home and their culture.

We say New found land. Because we say it fast it sounds like new fun lund. I visited the U.S. quite frequently as my sister lived in Conn. for many years until she passed away from cancer in 2001. I loved it there and I miss visiting her terribly. If you ever decide to come this way let me know I'd love to meet you.

ktbrandy--I love how you all say "mum", I think it's cute. But I know if I called my mom "mum" she'd think I was talking about the flower mum :rolleyes:.

Just here in the states there's lots of different ways of writing too. Rarely do I ever put a "g" on the end of action words like goin, swimmin, etc. Although I"m from the midwest I"m awful close to that KY border and say Ya'll at least 100 times a day.

My mother is Panamanian and she called her mother mama with an accent over the last 'a'. I say mom (I'm americanized ). I definetley love reading the posts and then guessing where they came from. And I like to read the phrases also.

I don't know if you happened to notice but I live in Connecticut! We do plan on visiting Canada with my girls..its just WHEN..with two new pups a summer vacation is kinda not an option

Reading this made realise, that It's a good job that we don't type out as we talk....I have a south London accent, and also use a lot of phrases for different things that some people here wouldn't understand....Londoners also have the habit of dropping the letter H....so happy becomes 'appy, house becomes 'ouse etc.... we also drop the g, so hoping would become 'opin'..... so we are also guilty of murdering our own langauge too!!
