There are these 2 teenage girls (13 and 14) down the block from me, they both have boxers (one male, one female). About a month ago, the girls thought they had a brilliant idea to breed them for extra $$. (yeah you read that right)

They regularly babysit for me, while I was getting ready I heard them talking about how much they should charge for each puppy.. (ok I was eaves dropping). So I asked, "how much for what puppy"? They said they mated thier dogs about a month, and asked if I wanted one..

They knew I was mad, and I asked if thier parents knew.. and nope.. they don't... I seen the momma and yeah, she is definitely pregnant. Her teets are a little bigger (just the nipples) and her belly matches her rib cage (which is normally slightly less than)

After the girls protested, I told thier parents, and they are upset as well. I guess, the parents of the female are really upset because they specifically put up the privacy fence just because they don't believe in spaying or some hubabaloo...

So here is what I pitched to the parents.
Instead of the girls or parents profiting off the sales of these pups, and so there isn't $$ contributing to more backyard breeding. They have a spay/neuter contract drawn up, and return if unwanted clause (I become the guardian of the unwanted, because they do not want to be) and instead of the prospective buyer giving them the $$, they have to come with a dated reciept from a shelter stating a minimum 150.00 donation to that shelter. in order to pick up thier puppy.

Good idea? Otherwise, I feel like these girls are getting what they wanted, and they did a bad deed.

Or if you have any other suggestions, please let me know.. I would love them!

That is unbelievable!

Well done you for intervening appicon.....and I think your suggestions are excellent!

I would add that the girls be involved in the work of rearing the puppies, and contribute their pocket money to help feed the mother whilst she is nursing them (she will eat like a horse!)
and the vet fees.

How does a spay/neuter contract work? What if the buyers never fulfill the contract? How about you take the puppies until they are old enough to be spayed or neutered and then give them away for a donation?

The spay/neuter contracts work with the animal control center, and is drawn up by them as well, within 3 weeks of purchace, an appointment, and payment of the spay/neuter must be fulfilled, or the puppy is confiscated (sp), then the Animal control center checks with the veterinarian on the scheduled date, to make sure the appointment has been done. If not, again the puppy is returned to the guardian, or if rescheduled, they will check on that day.. so on and so forth.. they have until the final day of the sixth month to have this done, if not accomplished, the puppy goes to the guardian. Once in the guardians hands, the puppy must be spayed/neutered within ONE WEEK After the the said 6 month time period.

(I already went and gotten information on the contract from our animal control ahead of time)

Keeping all the puppies for 6 months...well, that would be fun! But, I don't know if my husband would appreciate me that much.

They are supposedly taking her to be vetted tomorrow...

If I were their parents, I'd also make them work at an animal shelter for a few days to see how many dogs need homes!

I think that's an awesome idea! appicon to you for taking that kind of initiative. I also agree that the girls need to have to work to care for the mom and pups.

EXCELENT idea and good for you!! You should not only have the people make a donation to a shelter but, I second the opinion of Kpowell, who said have the girls volunteer at a shelter. This way they realize what goes on there and that it is not a good idea since there are so many unwanted dogs out there.
Good luck and I hope everyone follows through

I know this wont be recieved very well but since this is the epitome of irresponsible breeding....... Why not looking into having the pups aborted?
Why add to the already extreme overpopulation?

Since the owners of the bitch didnt want the puppies to begin with. And even though you might be willing to help out, rearing puppies is very time consuming and can be difficult for those that are 100% commited to the litter. Relying on a 13yr old to take the brunt of the responsiblity for helpless creatures is asking alot. With your help they will most definetly get better care but what about the times when you cannot be on hand.

All that said I would encourage you to discuss the care of the pups IN DEPTH with the parents to make sure they understand and accept the HUGE burden of responsibility that rearing puppies is.

Hope everything works out for the best!!

Now I Am Venting

.. my beliefs on any subject are always hidden no matter what, and I never push them on anyone. I do however sugest "Ideas" to others. One I didn't even suggest was terminating.

It had nothing to do with my beliefs on the subject, it was because of thiers. They do not believe in spaying because .. (sigh) ... in the wild, Dogs do not choose to have hysterectomy's. or have thier tails docked, or thier ears cropped, or any alterations for that matter.

So instead of the 250.00 spay, they paid the 3000+ for a 6' PVC Privacy fence. See what I mean. That suggestion wouldn't have ever left my mouth.

They are NOT going to go with my previous suggestion anyhow. They are doing something with thier church and the puppies I suppose. They mentioned, that the Pastor had suggested to them that there are alot of people in the church who cannot afford to get full blooded dogs, and wouldn't it be nice to adopt them out to the church members for free?!!
(and they still want me to be the guardian if the puppies are no longer wanted) and do NOT want a NO SPAY/NEUTER contract.. since that is against thier beliefs also, and no docking (but I don't care about that either way)

Also, thier church took in a donation for the vet bills and food for thier dog while she is pregnant, and got her a dog bed, and I gave her an extremely large crate.. one that is way to large for jesse, and my house.

well... its not the BEST update.. but an update none the less... I suppose...

I don't know why, I just can't be in good spirits on this.. I feel like a selfish nag. I just picture pound puppies in the future I guess... Not to mention that I am a control freak. (I have 3 children and a husband.. make that 4 children who will vouch for me on that one)

I think my problem here is that I wish I had tons of money to self own and operate my own shelter, when I see these poor dogs and cats at shelters, I get sick to my stomach. and I thought.. well.. lets see 6 pups (appox) times 150.00 well thats 900.00 to a shelter and dogs that could really use it.. I got GIDDY! Like sickeningly GIDDY.. (selfishly) grrrrr...

see how good deeds can turn into giddyness, into selfishness..into control freak? wow am I venting.. yeah... well...HOPE YOU ALL ARF HAVING A GOOD DAY!!! ;)

I think I would feel just as you do. Maybe you could offer to put together some information to be handed out with the pups when they go to the church members?
