I would never laugh you know what they say No ? is a stupid ?
The Venice Dog Club just had a show in Manatee County on 4th of July. But anyway the Boxer Club is where we found out about the shows and then just made it a point to get there when the boxers where showing. As far as asking if they were reputable breeders we didn't. They all love to talk about their dogs just like us, so we would ask the people on the sidelines waiting to show or done if we could pet the dogs. Then we would just ask some basic questions about thier dog how old etc. Tell them we were interested in getting a pet pup and were looking for a breeder. Most of the time they would give us the breeder they got their pup from or if they were a breeder would give us a card or number to give them a call and discuss any questions we had. They also seemed to point us in the direction of a breeder they were friends with that may be expecting pups or would put us on the list for a litter planned. OF course after getting names and numbers we would do some research "via the web" or the Boxer Club "for referrals" and check out the other champions etc from their line. I have to say that all the people we talked with were more than willing to answer any questions and if they could not do it then they would give us a number and spend time on the phone helping us.

Boxer breeders

Hi

Just a little story about breeders-I bought a beautiful female fawn from a breeder-very impressive papers, health check etc. At 6 months she had severe seizures-the breeder offered to replace her-but I loved her and would not even consider that. She did well on medication for 8 years. I just lost her to lymphoma after spending an enormous amount of money trying to save her. I now have a beautiful 1 year old boxer boy from rescue-no papers, no health check-nothing but a capacity to love and be loved forever-it depends what you want out of a dog. I want to love and be loved by my dog-could care less about his mother and father as that is no guarantee to future problems. As far as AKC-they are a joke.

Gypszy, sorry to hear about your loss.
Of course there are risks in getting a puppy from anyone byb or not, but a much less chance from a reputable breeder that has health tested many generations. (won't do any good to know just the health of the mom and dad).

AKC papers are a big joke.... I just roll my eyes when people brag of their AKC papers, they mean very very little in the quality of dog you got. I have even seen cocka schnoodles and whatever other mix claiming to have AKC papers.

I just wanted to add that we got our boxer from someone advertising in the paper. His price was comparable to breeders' and other ads in the paper, so he wasn't out for money. He had both parents on site and has had each of them since they were puppies, both were 5 years old and have had no health issues ever. He had health gaurantees on the puppies and related well with the mom and dad and puppies while we were there. Also I was impressed how the parents reacted to us while we were visiting. You can tell when a dog is treated with respect by how they act when you're around. To me, if you do the investigating, you can find some good puppies in the paper. But just have both eyes open and ask lots of questions. Riley is the best puppy, he is so mellow, well-behaved, listens like a charm. I'm glad we got him, even if he was a paper-dog.

I am a member of the Tampa Bay Boxer Club ..and my breeder was referred by them. After months & months of searching ..I decided to contact TBBC ...they gave me a list of breeders from all over Flordia...& I was on waiting lists..and I still had to wait..until I found the right breeder with the right puppy...but oh was it worth the wait....:)

The best way to go is go to shows in the area..talk to breeders ....watch the dogs....That is where I met my breeder & Boo for the 1st time ...a show in Ocala.
Go to infodog ...and sreach shows by state...
Remember....reputable breeders do not advertise...even in news papers...and most have waiting list.
If you have any more questions ...please feel free to PM me ...

I have adopted four gorgeous, wonderful boxers through Florida Boxer Rescue ages 8 weeks through 4 years. Knowing there is such a surplus of boxers and these amazing boxers needed me as much as I wanted them was wonderful.

I would encourage anyone who is a dedicated boxer lover to experience rescue. Watch out, there is no love like that of a rescued boxer! Most come from okay families and have no issues but they look into your eyes and know you have genuine love and committment and thank you every day.

But whatever you do, avoid classifieds. No reputable person would advertise in a newspaper.

so meanwhile, what happens to all the boxer puppies advertised in the classifieds? if people dedicated to dogs won't adopt them, then it seems to me they are then sentenced against their will to ignorant owners not capable of giving them a good home. they are lives, and some of them actually good lives, i wouldn't shut that option out so quickly. that sounds to me like saying to shut out humane societies because you never know what you're going to get there either. hmmm....i respect those opinions against classifieds, but i respectfully and completely disagree.

If people didn't support the unethical breeders who sell dogs through newspapers or pet shops they wouldn't disrespect the breed and breed for money. It's as simple as that. But, people insist on supporting them financially and dooming those poor females to being breeding machines and adding more poorly bred boxers to our world to suffer through a myriad of health problems.
I see it as cruel to the boxers to throw money to these people. Why support what ultimately is hurting our breed?

And their are plenty of people who love dogs but are not knowledgeable about boxers that will buy out of classifieds, if they could all be educated, slowly these back yard breeders would realize there is a better way to make a buck.

Shutting out humane societies says you don't believe in giving dogs a chance at life. A very, very different concept.

If the concept is still unclear, please visit www.nopuppymills.com and maybe it will become more clear as to why the only way to help our breed and boxers in general is to not support those who are not breeding responsibly. Would you want to encourage someone to bring boxers into the world that may have demodex, allergies, hip displaysia, etc? The people who advertise in the classified do just that, they surely haven't sought out health testing to protect against health issues.

puppy mills good, doubt it! but......

I cant say that either side is right or wrong, I fall into the not so knowledgable however very loving caring new boxer owners that, did yes get there boxer thru a breeder that would have to be classified a pupy mill at best. Lady, is a 2 year old boxer that has been raised in the worst of conditions at best. We responded to an add in the paper (Dallas Tx) for boxer puppys, however the breader informed us that she did have a female that was 2 years old and my wife and I thought this would be the best for us, you know skipp the potty trainning chewing stage jump right to the loving stage. I must say the breaders did seem to care about the dogs however they had way too many and were not providing adiquite care for the animals(lady, her brother, father, a litter of 6-7, and another female maybe 13 weeks old). Were all being kept in outdoor kennels little or no shade very hot! When we took Lady home she had fleas, ticks and was genraly very dirt! She had never been on a leash,in a car , much less in the house for more then a few hours at a time.
However I must also give you the good of this transaction as well. My Lady is the most loving caring fun dog I have ever owned!!!! I learn more and more what all of you already know about boxers, there is no better breed in the world!! So in closing I guess I am saying I agree with both of you the mills are awful and I see where they may be breeding in problems into our loving breed, however either I have been very lucky or these dogs need loving caring people like us to keep them from being destined to a life of humane societies or worse!! I dont want to offend any one in here just had to share my story!

Lady's Daddy,

I'm glad that you have a wonderful dog. :) She is lucky to have you as well considering the living conditions she once endured. "Outdoor kennel with little or no shade" and having "ticks and fleas" I would encourage you to please report this person to the animal control in their area. No dog should have to live in those conditions. :( I didn't know anything about BYB (back yard breeders) or Puppy mills until I visited this site. It's a shame that they play off our emotions into "saving" the dogs from the poor living conditions that they provide when they can easily give them shelter and proper care. We rescued our dog from a Humane Society who had and still has severe mange. I searched his Pedigree and found out that he came from a puppymill, that would explain his health problems. BYB's and Puppy mills don't care about the health of the animals that they breed, most are just in it for the money. Please don't think that I'm putting any blame on you, you did the dog a favor and saved it from the awful living conditions she lived in for 2 years. I'm a terror without air conditioning!, add a little dirt to the mix and forget it :) Can't wait to see pictures of your boxer.
