Just curious. Almost every dog training book I have read says that dogs have no place in human beds. I know that **I** personally have no desire for a big ole boxer to be sleeping with my husband and me (even though I love Leila a lot).

Do you mind my asking why you would choose to have a dog sleeping in bed (and under the covers in some cases) with you? Are their any merits to it or is it just common on this website?

I'm not trying to offend. Just genuinely curious. Everyone has great advice on training and behavior and the only thing that was really "clashed" with my outside teachings have been this sleeping arrangement..

TIA! :)

My x would not let Maggie sleep with us when she was a pup, and now that he is not around ( it's been a year) Maggie is 17months, the remnants of his keeping her off remain. I WANT her to sleep with me. I am sleeping alone most of the time, Unless the boyfriend is over, and there is plenty of room for her. (I am small, and I have king size bed.) When I am alone she sleeps at the end of the bed or in her chair. Never right next to me. When he's there she's right between us. I guess it's what makes you feel comfortable. If you allow it from the beginning they will expect to do it. My sister still has her kids sleeping with her and they are not little!
I welcome Maggie to sleep with me, but I usually don't get it.

I must admit, before Spud came along, I'd never allowed any of my previous dogs on the furniture...especially the bed.
Spud came to us from rescue with a note from his previous mummy (very sad) saying that he'd been allowed on her furniture so it might take a bit of retraining to stop him doing that if it were a problem.
Well, one look at those sad, brown eyes and I caved in!! I thought it would be mean to tell him no when his previous owner had let him. (I know, I know...I'm a soft touch! ;) )
I love the fact that he sleeps with me, even though it can be really uncomfortable at times, and I wouldn't change it for the world now.
I guess, at the end of the day, Spud is SPOILT ROTTEN! evilicon. lol

I just love having my cuddle bugs next to me, whether it be on the sofa or in the bed. I just have too many of them to let them all sleep with us.

DH was away alot over the last year (He's in the Navy) and while he was gone, I let all 3 boxer babies sleep with me. They just filled the void in the bed I guess, as well as kept me warm on cold nights.

Well I have owned many dogs in my time and they all start out not being allowed on the bed and then some way, some how they seem to talk you into it. Whether it's that your DH is going to be gone for a while, or a change in your life style they just look at you with those BIG BROWN EYES and it's over. Next thing you know your looking for a spot on the bed for you to lay your head on. Funny how that works isn't it.

No way! Ever since my first dog Buddy (a mutt) my dogs have always slept on the bed. I can't sleep unless I have a canine on the bed with me. Charlie Paper usually starts between my legs, but he'll inch his way up, and by the time I wake up, I'm on my back with his head on my shoulder (or my chest) and my arm is around him. In the summer it does get very hot, but I can't imagine it any other way.

My health problems forced us to finally gave up our beloved water bed. As a rule, dogs don't like to sleep on waterbeds. They get too warm after awhile, because of the warm water in the bed. Also, the bed moves everytime THEY move. Dogs like their feet on firm territory. So, for the past hundred years, no dogs in the bed, THEIR choice.
New bed, new dogs, new rules! Do we care? Depends on who you ask. Doesn't bother hubby if BOTH dogs are in bed with us. No problem for HIM!!! But for ME, well they want to sleep ON me. (I tell my hubby, since steriods have put 40 lbs on me, I used to be built like a Volkswagon, but now I'm built like a Cadallac.);)
I sometimes spend the night with one cheek hanging off the bed!! (And I don't mean my face!)
But lately, I guess the separation anxeity has passed, they KNOW they've got us right where they want us, and they have opted to sleep on the couch, cuddling each other.
Thank you, God!! :)

I wish Austin would sleep in the bed! He'll stay until dh comes in and then he goes out to the couch. He doesn't have to, but he does.

Since I was a little girl (my family has always been very animal oriented), I have slept in the same bed as a dog. As a child, I would even sleep in the dogs big ol' beds! I know it sounds weird, but hey, I was really young - the dogs were bigger than I was (I don't remember this)!

I dont know the advantages or disavantages of it to a certain point, but I do know that it's common everywhere (not just to this website)! :D

We LOVE having Asia sleep with us. We make her a bed on the floor beside ours which she will sleep on at times, but I'd prefer to have her in bed with us. Why? She's such a good cuddle-bug! There's no greater feeling to us than you roll over in the middle of the night or in the morning and a big smooshy, smiling face is right there. And then, as soon as you pay a milisecond of attention to them, the nub starts!

When I take naps, I let Asia sleep with me in the bed or on the couch, too. She has no off limits when it comes to furniture or roaming of the house while we are at home (could be a bad thing but it is a one bedroom apartment), but she's a year and a half and we've had no problems with it whatsoever!

We LOVE it and wouldn't have it any other way ... we'd truly miss our little snuggle bugg if she wasn't in bed with us! :D

When Cadence was a puppy, my fiance brought her into bed b/c she used to get up all the time and wander around the room. Then when she got older, he tried to make her get down and she wasn't having it! I loved having her in bed, especially b/c she always cuddled up with me. No matter where I was, on the couch, or in bed, Cadence was all snuggled up with me. Skye also likes to be on the bed, but she's 80 lbs and takes up a whole lotta room! She does love her bed, which is right next to ours. Now that Cadence is gone and we have our new puppy Colby, my fiance has been trying to keep him off the bed. Colby loves his dog bed, but usually sleeps cuddled up with Skye on hers. If I go to bed earlier than my fiance, I grab both dogs and we all 3 climb into bed. Then my fiance has to move them when he comes in. Colby gets up early no matter what day of the week, so on the weekends, he usually has to come up in the bed with us b/c he wanders all over our room and steals our shoes! I love having them in the bed. When my fiance isn't home or is staying up later, I always have them with me. I just like knowing they're right there, keeping me safe and warm. And there's nothing better than waking up to their little faces, staring intently at me, waiting for an eye to open. Then the nub goes wild, just like Haley said!!
