well 2 weeks ago my buddie and kadie were playing in the backyard and she hit her side on a cement block well a few days later her bruise started to grow and turn red, and then her eye did the same thing and i just took her to the vet and they said she has mange. the vet put her on some food that is soupose to boost her imune system, and she is getting diped well she told me it is the worst kind of mange there is (i forgot the name) and sence it is all the way on her body she said shes not positive the dips will be able to treat it. she told me its common in white boxers and white bulldogs because they usually have a lower immune system. so she said we will have to do some dip treatments 6 times, and i said well if after the 6 time its not fixed what do we do and she said we will cross that bridge when we get there. she said for a white boxer it wouldn't be a suprise if it didn't get any better.

I think your vet is talking nonsense. There is absolutely no reason why a boxer shouldn't recover from mange just because it is white. If it is demodectic mange that she has, then it is an *immune system* problem, nothing related to colour at all.

And since it is an immune system problem, chemical dips are often a poor treatment. Sure, they kill the mites, but they also knock the hell out of the animal's immune system and hence can make the problem worse. A better approach is to boost the immune system as far as possible through diet (raw is best, but a super premium kibble and supplements will help also), and to treat if necessary with oral ivomectin or topically with goodwinol ointment. Dips should be an absolute last resort, and only for generalised demodectic mange. Personally, if I were you, I'd seek the advice of a different vet.

The other type of mange is sarcoptic mange. That would have nothing to do with her being white either. Sarcoptic mites are the canine equivalent of scabies, and so far as I'm aware, they do not prefer one coat colour over another ;)

So what about the bruise on her side and her eye? As for the mange...when Capone came into the rescue he had demodex so bad that he had lost all but about 10% of his hair and was covered in scabs. He was on the oral ivermectin for several months....but he completely recovered. I think Kadie will do just fine with proper treatment. ;)

well she said whites have a lower immune system then the other boxers. and we are putting her on a food to boost her immune system, you don't think we should let them dip her?

Poor Kadie. Get well soon little girl. When Roxy had mange she was put on a liquid oral medication for many weeks. She is as good as new. My vet didn't even mention dips. I would seek another opinion and get her well asap. Hope all goes well!

I wouldn't let the vet dip her. I agree with Boxer. Try to boost the immune system and feed super premium food. What kind of food did the vet give you? Most vets don't sell good food.

That is absolutely not true -- and this is what Debbie referred to when she said your Vet is talking nonsense. If I were you, I would switch vets ASAP. Low immune system has nothing to do with the color of the Boxer

and we are putting her on a food to boost her immune system

Hmm...wonder what kind of food this is? And, is it sold at your vets office?

I would be very very very very reluctant to ever put my Boxer pup on the harsh dips. There are so many other ways you can tackle mange -- and believe me I've been through it myself -- before you ever have to go the route of dips.

Good luck
