Your opinions... Tattoo of my boxer?

For the record:

The tattoo on my chest hardly hurt more than an annoying scratch (like if you would scratch your skin in the same spot for about 20 minutes straight....like that) and hardly bled at all.

My LEG however....OUCH!! :eek: I got Piglet about 6 inches above my ankle, on the outside of my leg and it HURT and I bled like a stuck pig. When he was done, he vaselined it up and taped gauze over it, and I forgot to take the gauze off, fell asleep with it on...and the next morning had to PEEL it off my new tat... yikes..don't do that.

Its true that the outline (black) is more painful than the colors inside it...not sure why.

I have thought about just getting a pair of boxing gloves on the small of my back, that way when I get more than just one it will represent all of them. However at this point in time Marquee, will not allow me. I will take care of that soon enough. Can't wait to see the finished product on yours.

It took me forever but after being reminded about the fingerpaint prints, I had to find them! I thought I knew where they were. Several hours later I finally found them! Now I'm happy! I'm going to get one of them framed and hang it somewhere where I can see it a little more often. Now I want some prints of Twos' foot also. He doesn't know what he's in for!
Another thing to consider with tattoos is increasing or decreasing the size. If you like the image but it just doesn't look right (before you actually get it) you can have the image shrunk down or enlarged. Make sure it's exactly what you want before you have the work done. Don't be afraid to ask the tattooist to change something, he should be willing to work with you towards what you're looking for, not just slap some ink down.
The pawprint on the back of my calf is actually shrunk down 50% from the original, the lifesize print would have taken up my whole leg! Here's a shot of the pawprint.
Oh yeah, Cheryl, can I ask what you have a tattoo of on your ribcage? That's where I want to get the next portrait.

My tattoo artist said to never put vaseline on the tat or to cover it up. I was just wondering if this is true or does it vary from artist to artist. she gave ne some Vitamin ad ointment to put on several times a day.

YES, I have no idea why, but I know that when they are done with the outline I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Also, doesnt that stuff they spray on the tattoo feel so good

If you have never had a tattoo, study long and hard about where you want it. You say you are thinking about getting it on your shoulder. Do you ever go out to a nice restaurant, or go to formal functions in a dress that would expose that portion of your body? Not that you are ashamed of it, but it just may not be appropriate for the occasion.

My wife has a tattoo of a hummingbird near her breast. But it is in such a place that anything she may want to wear she can cover if she so desires. I have a TT on my forearm. Got it in Basic Training when I was young and dumb. It's a snake and a skull, and was kinda like our company's motto. Now, when we go out someplace nice, I sometimes wish I could cover it, or not have it at all. The other TT that I have is high on my upper arm, and is not hard to hide if I want to. This is a lifelong committment, and should be thought about.

As for getting the TT itself, it is not particularly painful (depending on where you get it). Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. I allowed my 16 year old daughter to get one on her lower back (below the beltline), and she can hide it if she wants to. She said it was somewhat uncomfortable, but not unbearable.

One more thing before I close. Shop around for a TT "ARTIST". Not just a tattooist. And don't shop for the best price. You get what you pay for. Go to the shop or studio. Look around, ask questions, watch him work (if he will allow it. some will, some won't), and be sure the place is spotlessly clean. You can almost tell as soon as you walk in whether you want this guy to start sticking needles in your body. Taking care of the TT after it is done is very important. The TT artist shold instruct you on how to do it and should give you a paper with those instructions so that you can refer back to them. A TT doesn't take long to heal if you take care of it poperly.

TT's can be very beautiful (and sometimes sexy) or they can be a total embarrassment. If you get it done, be certain about who does it and where it's at on your body.

My final opinion. If you want it..Go for it.:D

Great words of advice from Jim, especially the bit about being absolutely sure about where to place the tattoo. It's great to be able to show them off sometimes, but it's also nice to be able to keep them discreet and personal too because not everybody will understand that it's just a picture that happens to be on your body, and some people (ie potential employers etc) can be very judgemental.

to Mike & Heather, the tattoo on my ribcage is of a bird of paradise, like a hummingbird with a long bill, small wings and long tail feathers (not sure if it's a real one but I just liked the picture on the tattoo artists' wall). It's about 7 inches long and coloured in different shades of red and orange and was quite painful for a few days after being done as my ribs felt a bit bruised.

I am also very tempted to get one more, on my lower back, but it would probably be some kind of tibal pattern or band, rather than of something specific. I'm too much of a coward to go for one in a very prominant place just in case the artist didn't do a very good job as a bad tattoo on display all the time would be too embarrassing for me.

The most dramatic and impressive tattoo I have ever seen on a woman was when I was on holiday recently and this girl walked past with a tattoo of a vine that started at her left ankle and wound it's way right up her leg to her hip, then carried on up her back and down her arm and hand . It had all kinds of fruit growing on it and the colours were really vivid and totally amazing. It must have taken weeks of work to complete and looked increadible.

IF THEY'RE REPUTABLE THEY'LL HAVE MANY ALBUMS OF THEIR WORK YOU CAN LOOK AT. ANOTHER THING IS LOOK FOR PHOTOS THAT WERE TAKEN FRESH AND PHOTOS OF THE SAME TAT TAKEN MANY MONTHS LATER.

IN A MONTH TATS CAN FADE SOME, AND OUTLINES CAN BREAKUP AND YOU'LL NEED A TOUCHUP. A GOOD ARTIST CAN USUALLY AVOID THIS BY DOING IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

ONE MORE THING! IT'S YOUR BODY, YOUR CHOICE, BUT PLEASE, NOT ON THE SHOULDER! ON A LADY, SHOULDER TATS ARE TACKY! THAT IS, UNLESS YOU'RE REALLY "BUTCH", BUT THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE A LADY.

ACCEPTABLE AREAS FOR THAT KIND A TAT WOULD BE YOUR THIGH OR YOUR LEFT BREAST, OVER YOUR HEART! IF THEY ARE APPLIED PROPERLY, YOU'RE BODY WILL BECOME AN ART GALLERY.

IF NOT THOUGH, IT'S MORE LIKE EXPENSIVE GRAFFITI

TAKE A PIC OF HIM AND HOLD IT IN THOSE AREAS, THEN ON YOUR SHOULDER. NOW, TELL ME WHERE IT LOOKS BEST AND WAS EASIER FOR YOU TO SEE IT TOO.

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW THEM BETTER YOURSELF IN EITHER OF THOSE LOCATIONS. AND I'D BET ANYTHING THAT YOU'LL AGREE THAT THE BEST PLACE FOR YOUR BOY IS RIGHT OVER YOUR HEART.

Sorry to hear about "your Boy". He looks exactly like my "Ollie" only a little stockier. He was a beautiful boy.

A TT would be a great tribute to him and a constant reminder to you of what a beautiful dog and the great friend that I'm sure he was.

THE REASON THAT THE OUTLINE HURTS MORE THAN THE FILL IS BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY 1 NEEDLE ON THE OUTLINE BAR, WHEREAS ON THE SHADING BAR THERE ARE NUMEROUS AMOUNTS THAT VARY.

IF THEY HAVE A SMALL AREA TO SHADE THEY USE A BAR WITH A SMALLER AMOUNT, A LARGER AREA, THEY USE A BAR WITH A LARGER AMOUNT. THE MORE NUMBER OF NEEDLES, THE LESS IT HURTS.

THINK OF IT AS THIS, A SMALL OBJECT STRIKING YOU REPEATEDLY, OR EVEN ONCE, CONCENTRATES IT'S ENERGY IN A SMALL AREA, WHEREAS A LARGER OBJECT STRIKING YOU WITH THAT SAME ENERGY DOESN'T HURT AS MUCH AS THE AREA IS LARGER, THEREFORE SPREADING IT OVER A LARGER AREA AND NOT IN ONE SPECIFIC POINT.

OUR GIRL "CHEYENNE" WAS JUST AT THE PEAK OF HER HEAT AND DAWG TIED WITH HER 4 TIMES. THE LAST BEING ON THE NIGHT HE GOT BITTEN.

64 DAYS LATER WE GOT A LITTER! THERE WERE FIVE, BUT ONE HAD A VERY BAD CLEFT PALLET AND WENT TO WAIT AT THE BRIDGE WITH HIS DAD AND KEEP HIM COMPANY.

OF THE REMAINING 4 THERE'S A WHITE GIRL, A FLASHY BRINDLE GIRL, A FLASHY FAWN GIRL, AND A FAWN BLACK MASKED BOY! I CALL THEM "DAWGS PARTING SHOT".

i'd suggest putting it somewhere that's a little more secret, tho...
i have a huge tattoo of personal significance in the small of my back (it goes from my butt to my bra strap),and I like knowing that a)closeminded people can't use it as an excuse to discriminate against me and b) it's my little secret.

yeesh, i mean people i've dated don't know i have that tattoo.

not to get all flaky, but that's something i love about other people's tattoos. once upon a time i was hanging out with this guy i'd known for a few years. and he turned around to answer someone who was calling him and i got the tiniest glimpse of a series of stars running up the back of his arm (elbow to shoulder) -- it was like suddenly realizing that I had so much more to learn about him.

anyway, just my personal opinion about what's great about tattoos. maybe they mean something entirely different to you.
