You need to feed that dog

I was walking Lily the other evening and a boy on a bike yelled "hey, you need to feed that dog." That's not the first time I've heard that, but my vet assures me that her weight is normal. I feed her the Iams puppy for large breeds, even though she is almost 2 and she still hasn't gained weight. Mind you, I'm not trying to get her to, it's only a convenience thing because I have Weimeraner puppy and they were eating each other's food.

Does anyone else have a boxer without an ounce of fat on his/her body? Do you get comments about the weight?

My Lexi was one in February. She still has the same "figure" that she did when I got her at 7 months old. Not an ounce of fat on her either.

She eats like a pig!!! She has so much energy, I just assume she runs it off, because her vet isn't concerned about it at all. :)

My girl Madeline looked skinny skinny until 2 years of age. I could not get her to gain weight for anything. So rest assured, things will change right around the time they turn 2.

My girl is 2 1/2 right now and she is filling out very nicely. She has gained about 7 lbs in the last 6 months (she still doesn't have any fat on her) but she is wider and looks perfectly healthy. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

She will fill out around 3 if she's anything like Loke. Don't pay any attention to what people say. Open mouth, insert foot.

I know how you feel our female has been the smae weight since we rescued her about 2 years ago...i took her for testing and thought she had worms but the vet assured me that around 3 or so she probably would gain weight...compared to our male it looks like we starve her....

Our female is the same. She just turned three and she's still all muscle. We've had comments from people. I've brought it up with the vet several times and she's not concerned. She said that her weight is good and not to worry about it.

Our male doesn't have this problem at all, he's five. So maybe Jingo still has a couple of years before she fills out some?

Oh ya...

I have heard the range of comments. Most people who don't know much about Boxers tell me he is too skinny and I need to feed him. I had one lady though that said he was way too fat. She had a boxer the same age as Vegas. Hers was skin and bones. I mean on the verge of starving. I told her that I thought hers looked too skinny and she said it was because she fed the BARF diet. She said that it helps build muscle and doesn't add fat. I don't know if that is the case or not but if it is, I don't think I will feed BARF anytime soon. I don't like the skin and bones look!

yep hear it all the time

I have heard that thousands of time, literally thru the years. Don't expect her to fill out until this year coming up if she's about 2yrs old.

One thing I did hear from my old vet, is not to feed puppy food passed the age of 15 months tho, due to the high protein content having an overworking effect on their kidneys. Maybe you could ask your vet about that?

As a counterpoint to the BARF comment, I have been feeding Lady and Rufus BARF for over a month now, and it is finally the first time Lady *isn't* skin and bones! But Rufus was way overweight and now he is possibly the trimmest bulldog I have ever seen, unlike all the overweight dogs I see.

Lady is now 10 months old, so it could be her age catching up to her - she certainly had no fat whatsoever before.

Isn't it annoying the way people on the street feel they have a right to make any stupid comment they want about your dog?
