My son's 1 year old boxer, Juicy, has a yeast infection in her skin. She is on medication from vet, but will take about a week for relief. Is there anything we can do for her in mean time? She weighs 52 lbs. and is chewing hair off her feet and rubbing her face raw. Qny help would be appreciated!!!

Give her some plain (non-flavored) low fat yogurt everyday. It will not only help keep the yeast at bay but it will help any gas she may have. I give my dogs a tablespoon or so of yogurt in their Kong each day and then another tablespoon with their supper. Most yeast infections are caused by food. What kind of dog food does she eat? www.dogfoodanalysis.com can help with choosing a high quality food.

The first thing I would do is to figure out what caused this infection. Treating it will help now but it will return. A big culprit is foods with grains. Yeast also feeds off of sugar so a food low in carbs will also be beneficial. Does the pup have allergies? Sometimes yeast infections and allergies go hand in hand.

You can add Apple Cider Vinegar to their food or water. It's an anti-fungal (among other things). A teaspoon a day is a good starting point.
You can also use a rinse with a 50/50 mixture of raw, un-filtered apple cider vinegar and water which will also aid in healing and killing the bacteria growing on the skin; HOWEVER, APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR rinses should NEVER be applied to skin with any open lesions.

There really isn't enough biotics in yogurt to help a dog that has yeast issues. Also, if you are going to give yogurt ensure that there is NO sugar added or you are just making things worse. Get a good probiotic and give at mealtime (before/after according to directions). Cut out grains (treats included), fruits and veggies, ensure there is no sugar/carbs going into her system. Sorry but the med will probably do her system more harm than good, you would be better off to seek homeopathic help to heal her system as these things are mostly systematic issues.

Cami gives good advice, you really need to get down to the root of the problem and take a look at diet - raw would be the best for Juicy for her overall health and yeast issue.

Good luck

My guy has terrible allergies and the same problem with yeast. He goes to a holistic vet. I have him on Northwest naturals raw cubes. I give him a bath twice a week with ChlorhexiDerm (not for the face). I also clean his ears regulary and I used to spray his feet with Calendula spray, but he hates it and he's doing better so I cut that out. Also for the first week he was really bad, I did a betadine soak. Just filled the tub with water, added the betadine and had him stand in it for about five minutes. He's not 100%, but it has made a big differnece.

Thanks for all your advice! Have passed it on to son and he is changing her diet and looking into the holistic treatments. Hopefully she will be better soon. She is too precious to be miserable.

Try the earthbath tea tree oil and aloe vera shampoo for some relief from the itching. It has helped Tyson tremendously. You can get it at petsmart I know for sure not sure about other places. It is all natural and just fabulous! Sending healing vibes

Yogurt alone certainly isn't enough to cure the yeast problem but once the issue is under better control, the yogurt can help. Of course the sugar can be an issue too so it is important to make sure there is none in it. Brady has yeast issues and the yogurt helps keep it under control. Food is usually the culprit which is why I asked what food Juicy was eating. Not to mention, the yogurt helps keep the stinky butt away which is another thing that is minimized by a good food that agrees with the dog.
