Why do they think she is a he?

I could be wrong but, I dont think it is so much if THEY have a male dog. I think it is that most people associate Male dogs as being big, and muscular. Female dogs as being little and petite, cuddly. Which we all know cuddly totally explains being a boxer!! Anyhow... Just my opinion.
P.S. I had a Siberian/Timberwolf mix. Because of her "wolf" markings people assumed she was a he. I gently had to tell them No... He is a she. However when I had my siberian (purebreed) because of the fact she was fluffy, and looked sweet, people got it right, that she was definately a SHE!

I've had similar issues with mistaken gender. My boyfriend's brother has a 16 month boxer, Brooklyn, who we often babysit. Brooklyn is a male. Whenever I take him to the dog park, the other dog owners will refer to him as a "she".
It's a curious thing to me that some people will continue to say "she" during a conversation in which I refer to Brooklyn as a him. We realize that his name could be misleading. Also I've found that dog owners will use whichever pronoun they're accustomed to using with their dogs. My parents have three female dogs and sometimes goof by referring to Brooklyn as a girl.

An additional comment to throw in regarding skinkids: My younger sister (then 8 or 9) dressed as a pumpkin for Halloween. With her Dorothy Hamill-style haircut, just about every house commented on what a cute little boy she was. By the end of the night she was pretty tormented.

I can see it when you're dealing with a dog like a Bernese Mountain Dog or something with tons of hair...but it's fairly obvious on a Boxer!
I used to get that a lot with Xena. Usually when she was getting fat...when she slimmed down to her perfect weight, she looked very feminine. I saw her last weekend, and was sad to see that the ex-hubby has let her get fat again.
Diesel is pretty manly, I guess, so people can usually tell. But he's still pretty skinny at 18 months old, so everyone can tell he's a puppy.

I have the opposite problem. Although Mason is 85lbs people ALWAYS call him a she. He is fixed and his "area" is not very prominate so I just shrug it off. Since getting our little girl, my Husband has a hard time saying "good girl" instead of good boy. I keep reminding him, hopefully it'll sink in sometime soon !

A lot of people call Toffee a "he" when they first meet her too. I think it is because of her size (she's 23" and 80 pounds). I just work "her" or "she" into the conversation hoping they will catch on. Sometimes they do, and sometimes.... well....there's no hope for some people, LOL!
Oh yeah, get this all the time, especially since our other fur kid is an English Cocker, who is by the way a male (Gus), but I suppose compared to Zoe he does look a little girly. Even our friends make the mistake on occasion but they quickly recover, infact one of them has the same problem with their female Chocolate Lab, Meadow. I just try to make light of the situation and say how the girly one is the boy & the boyish one is a girl... I think some people just have a hard time getting it to sink in.
