Why do they think she is a he?

I am starting to get frustrated. It seems that most people I come across on the street or at the dog park think my little Sandy is a guy. Despite the fact that she now wears a hot pink collar and has her front toe nails painted hot pink. I know it's pretty common for people to want to refer to a dog as a he, but come on already. Isn't all the pink enough of a clue? Does she need to wear a big sign that says "I AM A GIRL" too? I think what put me over the edge is that fact that yesterday while at the dog park I had a lady who owned a boxer herself call Sandy a guy repeatidly. She even asked if "he" was a metrosexual b/c of the hot pink nails. I didnt even know how to respond. I really didnt even have a chance b/c she was so busy listening to herself talk. So I just kind of walked away from her and all her crazy talk...lol. Anyway, has anyone else experienced something similar?

Don't be offended! I do it all the time and I attribute it to me having 2 boys. I always say "he" and then appologise after. It's what I'm used to. If I'm wrong I tell them I'm sorry but I have two boys and it's a habit.

I'm the same way. My family always had male animals when I was growing up and "he" just comes out of my mouth first. My Aunt & Uncle are the opposite. They always had female animals and tend to call Oscar a "she".
I don't think Oscar takes it personally so it doesn't really matter to me.

I know I shoudnt be, and most of the time I am not. I think that one lady got under my skin though. Most people do apologize if they make the mistake, or ask first. But she didn't seem to want to listen, and then went on to make jokes about her sexuality. I guess sometimes you just have to let stuff slide.

Your Boxer girl is really cute! I have a friend who has a male English Cocker and she's constantly referring to Tae (my Boxer girl) as a he. I think it's what everyone else said, people use the gender of the dog they own. I always try to "check" before referring to a dog!

i think it's more annoying when they mistaken the breed of my dog instead the gender. most of the time, people ask if he's a pit. makes me furious!!

That's right...and not sweat the small stuff. By the way, if it helps any, I can look at that little sweet face and tell she's all lady! Such a cutie pie! Give her a big ol BW squeeze for all of us! djk

My mother always refers to my definitely male cat, Roscoe, as a "she." I guess in her head, for some unknown reason "feline" = "female"
