Why do people feel compelled to give you their 'expert' opinion (vent - long, sorry)

Wow Sandra...Congrats for keeping your cool the way you did..hats off to you for that...you did much better than I would have!! Just reading your post...I was getting offended by this "woman"!!
Here's an idea...any other members in the San Fransisco area....close to Sandra and Mason?? I hear there's gonna be a "Boxer Tug-of-War" tournament in that VERY dog park!! All Boxers welcome to join in the fun!! ;)
I do not go to doggie parks for this very reason!

People!?

Before you're "evicted" from the park... I hope Mason gets the opportunity to give this lady a good boxer wash, pees on her leg, or at least lets one go near her! They're building a special area for little dogs in our seven acre park, maybe you could suggest it to your park district! To me, if your little "snookie" may look like prey to a larger dog...KEEP 'EM AT HOME!

That went well - NOT!! (long again - but need to vent (and have a stiff drink!))

So I went to the park, with my friend Hilda and her sharpei (who's also been branded vicious) and Frank with Nadia, the most beautify Vizla (sp?), who's just turned one. I very politely and calmly approached the 'expert', who was standing with another of the Queen's entourage and held out the copy of the section about Tug of War from The Culture Clash. I very politely said, "thank you for you opinion on tug of war. I happen to base my opinion on this book, which is one of many I've read. If you are going to give opinions and tell people you are an expert, you may want to widen your scope of reading materials to include other opinions. I am not, as you implied, ignorant and trying to promote a dangerous dog. My dog is very well socialized, plays rough but well and is, above all, a dog."

She wouldn't even take the article. She would not be persuaded that I was anything but ignorant on dogs. Her dog is three times national obedience championship (or something, who cares) and so she is an expert and tug is not something you should ever play with your dog. At this point also, her friend says to a woman passing by with her baby, "you'd better watch those two dogs (points to Mason and Wrinkles (the Sharpei)), they are very dangerous and will attack!! I was stunned. Thankfully I know the woman with the baby and she knows Mason and knows the truth. She said "hey, you want to see vicious - I have an 8 year unsocialized rottweiler - now SHE has issues"!

I have to say I'm not proud of how I totally lost it at that point. I stated very loudly and with quite a few profanities that how dare they start telling people my dog is dangerous, when he clearly isn't. How dare they pass judgement and condemn for no reason and maybe they should muzzle themselves. The friend told me to watch my language and I told her she was not my mother so to 'go away rudely'! My friend Frank then spent 20 minutes trying to point out that I was one of the most responsible dog owners - my dog was still in training, I was constantly paying attention and working with him (Mason during this time was a dream - coming whenever I called and playing so sweetly with Nadia and Wrinkles!). She still would not have it and said she was probably going to have to call the police in the near future when my dog attacked someone!

At this point a group of children walked through the park. Mason and Wrinkles (as usual I might add) ignored them. Nadia, being the one year old that she is, barked at one, who cringed. The friend said loudly "see, vicious!!"

I will not take Mason back to that park as I would never put in him a position of jeapardy. Should he ever be attacked by another dog (which has happened), it will be assumed it is his fault. I may let him walk through there if no one is around and I probably won't pick up after him!!!

Thankfully I have a group of friends who all have 'real dogs' and all adore Mason for his rambunctious play and his personality. In fact, they often seek me out as Mason is one of the few dogs guaranteed to wear another dog out with running and playing.

Honestly, I am stunned and shocked at the hostility and ignorance. I didn't sleep much last night, I was so angry - and still am.

Hmm - Xenaprincess - I just reread your post - I like the idea of a boxer tug of war tournament in the park!!

Thanks to you all for your support. We boxers owners are so lucky to have, know and understand this special breed. I love all dogs, but this one is truly the most amazing. If I had a perfectly obedient "national champion", I'd be bored with him by now - the one at the park just got to lie at his owners feet and occasionally chase the ball - he never plays with other dogs and, in my view, doesn't have nearly as much fun as Mason and his buddies!

OK, enough venting - I could go on all day!

Thank you all again for listening!!

Wow- you handled that so well. We have a dog park close by, and it is one of the only ones that a lot of dogs go to. We have the "dog park clique" too, but have become friends with many of them while their friends weren't there to keep them occupied and away from new people, so they aren't so bad.

I love it when all the boxer people come. We show up with our friends and their boxer and all the boxers flock to each other and start playing boxer style. Within 10 minutes, anyone without a boxer is nowhere in sight. We all just laugh, because it always happens and we really don't mind. Then there is the guy with the Jack Russell that loves boxers and the owner likes to watch the boxers beat up on him because he is such a terror himself (we call him sir humpalot).

Here and there, you get the people with their little foofie ankle biters that shriek and carry their dogs when the bigger dogs come to say hi. One man actually kicked the Jack Russell for going near his pug. Half the park was ready to fight the guy and his awful wife that uses horrible language in front of her 3 year old son.

Needless to say, we always have some dog park drama. I think its fun... but some people can just be so rude.

Before I saw that you'd reached that conclusion yourself, I was going to suggest that you stay away because these people WILL likely all testify that it's YOUR dog's fault should anything at all happen in your presence. True or not, the blood is too bad to risk your ability to keep your dog in the eventuality of an incident.

And while it sounds like she was misguided, I've been in her position and asked people to stop bringing a particular dog to our local (non dog) park, at least during the times when other dogs were there. The lady and her husband both thought I had a hell of a lot of nerve, but I spoke up because I was sick of all of the people who had made 6 am dog get togethers at the park such a pleasure leaving the moment they arrived. People would gripe and leave, but not speak up.

Her dog didn't break skin or draw blood, but not because it wouldn't have escalated to that if the rest of us weren't avoiding him. He would appear to play normally enough, then single out a dog he thought he could bully and charge and slam it. His mom would coo at him to stop being such a bad boy and tell us that he was just "dominant," despite the fact that he would not back off when the other dog surrendered -- a VERY bad sign.

When he charged and slammed my 4 month old puppy (which was on leash and OUTSIDE the park in the parking lot) I told her in no uncertain terms that I would lead a dozen people to the hearing that would doubtless be held as soon as he bit somebody or killed their dog, because they'd been warned and they continued to put him in a position where they were asking for trouble.

Eventually all the other dog people stopped using the park all together, because they single handedly ruined it for us. What used to be a carefree half hour or 45 minutes every day, rain or shine, became an exercise in paranoia -- will they show up? Do you see them yet? Quick! Grab your dogs and get out of here!

I don't offer that story to say in any way that the lady was right, but only to say that dog people HAVE to police the dog parks to a certain extent., the same way parents have to police playgrounds if there is one child who consistently beats on the other children.

Kathryn,

I wholeheartedly agree that there are dog owners out there with dogs that should not be at the dog park and have encountered many that I keep Mason away from because they are too aggressive. I also know which dogs Mason doesn't like and will steer clear of them - I would never put my dog or anyone else's dog in a position of danger.

Which is also why I get so upset at people accusing Mason of being 'dangerous' and me as an ignorant dog owner who is promoting that behavior! He is a rough player - but with his buddies who like it rough. He actually adjusts his behavior for different dogs - in fact this morning he started playing, for the first time, with little Lucy the lab puppy and he was so gentle with her - they were running and wrestling and having a blast! When he's playing with Bebe, his rottie girlfriend, they run, body slam each other and growl and bark and generally get rambunctious - but any time I feel Mason is either getting too wound up or too beaten up, I call him or Bebe's mum calls her and they both break up and come to us - both being under good voice command! I'll usually have Mason sit by me for a couple of minutes to calm down and he will then either go back to playing with Bebe, or find one of his other buddies for a good run or romp.

To quote Jean Donaldson in The Culture Clash, "Dogs are animals.......They are not humans in dog suits." Of course, I'll never tell Mason that though!!

Hey Sandra,

Have you ever been to Point Isabel? It's on the East Bay and it's HUGE... so that if you encounter a dog/owner you don't like, there is plenty of room to move to another area. I take Laika there, usually during the week, as I don't like the weekend crowds, and she would LOVE a boxer playpal!
