Hi all...well this will be our first Thanksgiving with deep fried turkey. YUM! I just want to check and see if anyone has done this before and can give any info on how long per pound, etc. We have a 13 lb turkey. I'm guessing from what I can find about 1 to 1 1/2 hours? Is there a preferred type of oil to use? Thanks...

BTW...I think Coco is ready too...When I brought the bird home she was on me all the way from the front door to the freezer and her nose was on that turkey the whole way. It was funny her little sniffer was in overdrive, frozen or not..she smelled it so I can imagine that she'll be just as ready for dinner as we will be. :)

I assume that this is for you and not you dog, so I will move it to the people recipe forum. :)

It's only your dinner if you make sure it's not a coco level LOL, otherwise it's HER dinner and YOU get the leftovers=) Let us know how it turns out, I've always wondered about doing this but have never tried. Let us know if it was hard or easy please hehe.

I have had fried turkey many times and it is very tasty. I'm not sure on the minutes per pound but I do know that you use peanut oil. Peanut oil has a much higher scorch (sp?) temperature. By the time it's cooked the skin looks pretty dark, almost burnt. It is very good though.

Deep fried turkey is very good when done properly. Be very careful however. I am a fire fighter/ EMT and have been called to many a fry gone wrong. Most people put to much oil in and when they drop the turkey the oil spills over and everything catches fire. By the time they get the turkey back its burnt beond recognition. My grannie smokes her turkey. Different taste but also good and safer. Good luck to ya and maybe have the fire dept on stand-by{hahaha}. You might want to by a back up turkey just in case.

I fried my first one last Thanksgiving. I also roasted one. I injected it with seasoning and deep fried it for 3 min per pound. The end result was plenty of leftover ROASTED turkey. Dookie was correct with the warnings. do not overfill the oil. Most cookers are marked with the oil level.Try it and have a happy. fiestaicon

Totally off the subject (sorry) - you should try a Turducken next year. My cousin has done it - it's a Turkey stuffed with a chicken stuffed with a duck - all deboned. It's supposed to be out of this world (but a lot of work).
