I used to leave my 2 Boxers in the den & yard but Maxxie was missing for 3 days and I still don't know how she got out. So I decided to block the doggy door and to just leave them in the den. However, it is not a very big room and they had so much fun playing, sunbathing and sleeping in the yard that I am feeling guilty.

Karen don't feel bad, it's better safe then sorry. (So glad to hear you found her though, I saw your initial post.) I have two that have free roam and my rescue is in a crate which faces our house guest Mia's crate. You just have to look at it as they are safe, well cared for and if you are on this board, most likely spoiled beyond recoginition... :D and if they have to be confined during the day so be it, there are a lot of other Boxers out there without half the luxuries ours have.

I drop Casey off at my parents house on the way to work.
If I have to run out for a while she has free run of the house. I would not hesitate to use a crate if I felt she would be unsafe alone.

Crated..well sometimes

Dasia is 9 month's old and we have her crated for about 7 hours only on Mondays, Tuesdays and sometimes Fridays. Wednesdays and Thursdays she has the run of the house and soon will have the run of the backyard as soon it is done. (making it dog friendly :D ) My boyfriends awesome mother watches her on those days.

Since it has been getting nicer here in Seattle my boyfriend will be taking her to work so that we can take her to the dog park just down the street (Marrymoor park) on our lunch break :)

Austin has free run of the house. He usually goes to bed (mine) when we go out. Sometimes he's waiting in the window when I come home.:D

Gidget (and Freckles) are both crated when no one is home. My husband is retired so is in and out all day to tend to them. They are rarely crated for more than 5 hours at a time. I work different hours during the week so I am off early 3 of 5 work days. :)

 Both boxers 8 & 10 have free run of the house, there is no doggie door in the house but there is one out into the backyard from the screen enclosure. Our new 1 year old rescue sheppard/chow mix has needed to be crated though, she was still chewing up everything. Just recently though have been leaving her out for increasingly longer periods with real good results.
Now having said that I need to say this. As you all know boxers are very smart and very protective, one of mine has been able to open doors if they aren't locked. I haven't caught them doing it yet but it has happened on more than one occassion. Deliberate or just happenstance I don't know. But all the doors must stay locked. There was an incident once with a cat that I won't discuss, but let's just say it wasn't pleasant or pretty.

My "kids" have the bedroom and the bathroom to themselves. As long as there's nothing on the floor or within reach, they don't get into any trouble!
