When to neuter

Just wondering if there are any opinons on neutering out there? I know all the veternary opions seem to be that the timing makes no real difference. I just wonder if it does or doesn't in any way effect their growth and developement to neuter too early, and if there is any potential problem in waiting longer. Lenny is 5 months old now, and such a fabulous guy, I might add.

I don't think there is any rule! Younger the better, they spring back easier. Ozzy was just done wednesday and you would never know it. We waited much later for our rottie because we wanted him to bulk out a bit more, but I wish we would have done it sooner now because he's a real male, full of testosterone always after the female even though he fixed.

I think 5-6 months, I know they have something called micro surgey now where it can be done earlier but not too sure about that. As soon as the testi's have come down??

We lost our ten year old boxer in September due to prostate cancer. I have read numerous places that neutering earlier decreases the chance of a male getting this type of cancer later in life. Our male was 2 before he was neutered and we did not rescue him until he was 5. needless to say that our new pups that were born on 9/11 have already been spayed and neutered.

I say do it early, they do seem to have better results in the end!!!

Hey, great question! I was wondering the same thing. We just got a beautiful brindle boy to add to our 6 month old fawn girl. (who was just spade). My vet told me to wait until he was 8 or 9 months. Anyone else have any info on this, I would love to hear it too!!

My vote is 6 months!
We just had Roscoe neutered a few weeks ago, he was just a few days shy of six months. The day of his surgery I brought him home, he slept all evening and woke up as good as new the next morning. The hardest part was convincing him that he couldn't play much for the next days.
I think it's the responsible choice and if you're going to do it, there is no reason to wait, they will be fine and will heal and be back to normal even quicker if they are younger.
I know there's TONS of info about it if you want to search the boards.

Ditto Matt S's answer.

It is never too late, but optimal timing is fairly early - preferably by 8 months. Early neuter will have *no* adverse effects on the development of the pup, as some believe, but can have dramatic effects for the good with the health of the dog.
