i have a 4 1/2 month old pup and was just wondering when i should get him nuetered. i have been told that it will stunt their growth. is this true?

That is not true - I have a boxer boy who is with my mother at the moment, because of our move, and he was nuetered at 5 months and now is 2, and weights 75-80 lbs.

I would think you could nueter him at anytime, since he is over 4 months, IMO.

Our vet told us not to rush into getting our little boy neutered. She told us that there is no hurry to "fix" a boy (just keep him away from the little girls!!) She recommended around 1 yr of age - her reason was that he would develop more masculine features because of the testosterone.l

I'm not an expert, but that doesn't sound right. My 2 year old male is very masculine, and a very big boy. I guess I just feel it's better safe than sorry, why have the headache of him accidently getting another dog pregnant, you can't watch him 24/7, even though we all try. :)

This sounds a bit crazy to me too. I'd rather err on the side of having a dog that's a few pounds smaller than risk his health and well being. Not to mention it only takes one time to have an unwanted litter of puppies. At nearly 5 months, he's old enough to do it now. I know it can be a bit scary, but you're making the right choice.

I think you need a new vet :)

Neutering him now will probably make him a quarter inch or so taller than he would be if you waited. His weight and musculature will be what they are genetically predetermined to be (assuming good nutrition and exercise).

His penis will be smaller, and he won't have testicles, but those should be the only visible differences. You'd only notice the difference in testicle size if you had him next to an intact male, anyway.

No offense, but, that does sound pretty bogus.

Harley is 5 months old. Several vets have said that they dont perform the surgury until 6mos. of age since they have to be put under anestisia (sp?) (No ACE! ;) ) But, I know some people who have had their boys neutered at 4mos. of age and they are VERY masculine. I dont think it affects their masculinity or size. So what if their a few lbs smaller than they would be if left unneutered. For the best intrest of your pup and his health, I'd get him neutered way before 1 yr. of age.

Also, as far as "keeping him away from little girls" When Boys are teenagers (and yes, our furboys are teens at a point too) they will jump through hoops to get to a female in heat, no matter how hard you watch them... they will find a way, after all they are males! wackicon

I'd call around to Vets in your area and get several opinions before waiting too long.

Good Luck

Boo was neutered at 6 months old ...he is now 20 months & 80+ lbs ...

You can do a search on neutering ..and the reasons why and when...theres tons of info on this board.

Hmmm, your vet doesn't seem to know much about the current research. I'd worry if that's who was giving me advice. You can do a search on boxerworld to yield some actual research that proves otherwise. The only thing the testosterone may kick in would be marking your furniture and having trouble getting along with other males. Most dogs do not like intact dogs.

I agree with clover's mom. My baby got neutered at 6months and he is extremely masculine. Paula & Oscar.
