We had the same debate. Our bedrooms and lounge were carpeted and the kitchen and dining area are tiled. We wanted to redo the whole house in wood flooring, but opted to do only the lounge first as a "trial".
Yes the wood is easy to clean and I won't go back to carpet, I haven't found that it scratches but it sure shows up the dirt more than the tiles. I find myself in there with a broom 2 or 3 times a day. Our two are free to go outside as they wish, it's scary how much they bring in. Their nails do make more noise than the tiles, though you get used to it. But I do find the wood more slippery than the tiles, I am especially concerned about this because Sugar is getting arthritis and is struggeling with her back legs a bit, she walks and gets up off the tiles much easier than the wood. As for Odie being a youngster, I have found that he slips far worse on the wood when he plays than on the tiles.
So I guess what I am saying is that there is a chance we may put wood in the bedrooms (not being as busy as the living areas), but as for the rest, including the lounge, I think we will be tiling.
