Keeper's Mom

Our house was built in 1962 and with the addition of Keeper, we tore all our hardwood out. It was great for cleaning up accidents, but he scratched them up really bad in less than a month. A year later, I called someone out to refinish them and they couldn't because the gouges were too deep and the floors had been refinished twice before. Out they went and we now have laminate wood (Pergo like but made by WilsonArt- better warranty). He slides around but doesn't actually harm the floors.

We had the same debate. Our bedrooms and lounge were carpeted and the kitchen and dining area are tiled. We wanted to redo the whole house in wood flooring, but opted to do only the lounge first as a "trial".

Yes the wood is easy to clean and I won't go back to carpet, I haven't found that it scratches but it sure shows up the dirt more than the tiles. I find myself in there with a broom 2 or 3 times a day. Our two are free to go outside as they wish, it's scary how much they bring in. Their nails do make more noise than the tiles, though you get used to it. But I do find the wood more slippery than the tiles, I am especially concerned about this because Sugar is getting arthritis and is struggeling with her back legs a bit, she walks and gets up off the tiles much easier than the wood. As for Odie being a youngster, I have found that he slips far worse on the wood when he plays than on the tiles.

So I guess what I am saying is that there is a chance we may put wood in the bedrooms (not being as busy as the living areas), but as for the rest, including the lounge, I think we will be tiling.

My daughter has wood, and when her collie had her two front legs in plaster (run over by a car  ), we were all on tenderhooks, as the poor dog kept "doing the splits" , as the wood can be quite slippy.

We just got tiles in the kitchen, and Biff slides all over the place, especially if he comes running through looking for his dinner.

I prefer carpets :)

Finished our basement last fall & laid Mannington Laminate...Seems to be nearly indestructable. DH dropped an air compressor on it just a few days after it was laid & not even a dent & no scratches to date. They say laminates are not good for water but a some of the companies will warranty for water. Just make sure you do your homework, my b-i-l laid Turquette (sp?) brand laminate & it was scratching & buffing w/i weeks of being laid.

We have oak color laminate from Sam's in our kitchen and it shows no scratches from Shae. I would go with laminate or tile, either one. Shae has learned to sort of 'guard' herself from sliding into things when she chases a ball into the kitchen. Somehow she kind of brakes a little when she hits the wood floor!

pergo is great. I wouldn't have any scratches at all had we lined the bottom of our couch with a felt, it's got a metal bar and the dogs weren't the first to drag the couch. They have managed to body slam the loveseat and move it a lil to the left a lil to the right so there's a set of scratches under it. But their nails havent phased the floor at all.
They get used to running on it and planning for the cornering though every now and again they get overzealous and swoosh into a corner table so my suggestion is dont put anything like a lamp in that kind of a turn *chuckles* we've watched ours nearly fly off a table once or twice.

We have hardwoods and love them. We had them distressed at the time the house was being built so you can't tell the difference in the dogs damage and the distressing. We did put a little rug at the top of the stairs and in front of the doors where they tend to scratch the floors.

We had wood floors put in our home about two years ago. Our dog (Buddy) does not like to lay on the bare floor (I think it is to cold) so a rug or through bed is in the main rooms where the family generally hangs out. Because of the size of Boxers there is some damage that occurs simply from their playfulness (scratches mainly). The clean up is much better and easier with the wood floors.

We tried boots of different kinds that did not work well (Made his feet tender) and we finally just accepted the fact that we would get a few scratches on the floor. He only scratches if he gets excited and is trying to play with you. We have a basement that we play but not upstairs anymore. The scratches appear to be able to be rubbed out and are not deep.

My parents put the "synthetic" type wood floors you purchase at Home Depot into there home and get laid like tile. Our dog has been on the floor and I would not recommend it with a Boxer. I felt he could really damage the floor and it would be unrepairable.

We used a Red Brazilian Hardwood that was prefinished before installation. It has held up nicely.

pergo floors are not worth what you pay. to buy and install pergo is the same price as tile and only has 15-20 year guarentee. tile has a lifetime warrenty

We have ceramic tile. Zoe and Flash do slip and slide in heated playing, but overall, they do great on it. :)
