Madison's Mom

Completely Boxer Crazy
Let's see, Madison's illnesses/surgeries so far:

Vomiting as a puppy because of eating 7 year locus (sp)
Stiched twice on ear crop
Spay
Twice had to have split nail's removed
Kennel Cough
Lump removed right above where dew claw was

soon to have lump on ear removed..... pray that it is not cancer.

I think overall Maddie has been one healthy boxer girl.

Clia is a veterinarian's delight! Luckily, I now have pet insurance. But, Clia has had:

Several bouts with ear infections;

Several bouts of vomiting;

Misc. Infections, Viruses, etc., to include particularly vicuous strain that caused gastro-entiritis;

Hay Fever;

Skin rash;

Torn ACL (a biggie, TPLO for $2,500 total);

and, last but certainly not least, hip dysplasia.

Poor little girl! Since her hip has gotten worse, sometimes she sits on the back deck and stares into space. She looks so sad, like she is thinking about her hip and the stress is getting to her. I know Boxer's can't think like that, but......

Oh, the vet bills! But after reading some of the other posts I guess I'm pretty lucky.

Boomer (14months):

I thought he had bloat at 9 weeks (amazing how big thier little tummies can get);
Emergency trip to vet while on vacation due to itching (allergies);
Another trip after finding out he was allergic to beef;
Slight ear infection;
Doggie flu;
Doggie flu (lost 6lbs this time!);
Neutering;
Surgery to remove blood clot and swelling after neutering(when the vet says not to let them run, they mean it! The swelling, uh, looked very painful.

And now as I sit at the computer, I just put my hand on his belly and found a nasty hot spot/lump so he'll probably be at the vets next week.

Super Boxer
Glad I'm not alone

Here I thought it was just poor luck that Jersey had suffered so much in so short a time, but seems lots of us have had to cry over our babies (and the vet bills).

Jersey (currently aged 4 1/2 months):

worms - easily taken care of

tore a toenail right off - trying to escape the room by climbing over the two babygates while we were gone (almost completely healed now)

vomitting - huge piles 2 times now, not sure the cause and was told not to be alarmed

ate a bee that stung her tongue - no reaction thank god, except her pride seem injured

ate a small rock - came out whole in a poop

cat scratch on her eye - small irritant for a day then cleared up on it's own

skin scraping on top of her head to check the scabs there - still not sure what it is, but I believe it's due to the hives (see next item)

severe allergic reaction to leptospirosis vaccine - first noticed her problem with a prolapsed rectum (get the latex gloves handy for this trouble!), then she began swelling everywhere and was covered in hives from nose to tail. Throat constricted and began having trouble breathing. On high dose of prednisone for a while (after three trips to the emerg vet and two trips to the regular vet). Cleared up, don't give lepto anymore. Small scabs formed where the worst of the hives were, mostly on the top of her head.

puppy vaginitis - still there, went away with treatment of amoxil, but came back. Leaving it as is for now.

As for pet insurance, we had planned on getting her insured at 8 weeks old for just the first year (friends of ours went through a ton of money in the first year on their chocolate lab). I applied online a couple hours before we discovered her reaction to the lepto, so none of that weekends visits were covered. :( We are now covered with Pet Care Insurance, and have just mailed off our first claim, so we hope that it goes well.

Here's hoping that the next 5 months for Jersey are uneventful!

Boxer Buddy
Oh my, where do I begin:

Dixie

Chin rash....allergic to plastic

fainting spells when a puppy from pulling too hard on her leash when walking

have had a number of cytologies....checking lumps
some have been removed surgically

spay

Had biopsy a few weeks ago.....front bottom teeth are not attached to the bone anymore....bone disappeared...biopsy didn't determine the cause other than no cancer found at biopsy site.

Back to Vet TODAY (I work there)....Swelling around teeth again....xrays taken...bone is totally disappearing on lower right jaw....Dr. is totally miffed....thinks it could possibly be a reabsorbtion disease or bone marrow cancer....even though biopsy was negative.....sending xrays to radiologist at Va. Tech for opinion....I am really scared....I have worked for this Vet for a long time and I have never seen her totally miffed about anything until now....just my luck....had to be my dog she is miffed on!! :confused: :( :confused:

Brittany:

Has had a heart murmur since she was only a few months old....she is now 3 3/4 years old

other than that....luckily she has been healthy :)

Champ has had a pretty rough life. But you couldn't tell by how he acts.

First b cell cancer at 10 months old. Said we would be lucky if we had him till he was 5. He is almost 8 now.

12 more surgeries in his life time.

hives from bee stings

hives from raw hide

tons of food allergies.

I wouldn't trade him for the world!

Interesting thread.....

We've had bloat, mastitis, allergies, yeast infections, anaphylactic shock from wasp sting, aortic stenosis, ear mites, kennel cough, a couple of bruised/strained limbs, and two histiocytomas. Most of these were from before we switched to a raw diet/holistic philosophy.

I am curious - how many of the ailments you all have catalogued occurred within 3 months of vaccination?

Julie- Subi's reoccuring mange happened right after her spay and i was told the spay weakened her immune system, but she also had vacc's at the time so i dont know

the telephone cord and answering machine were a month after the vacc's think they made bailey hungry :LOL: :LOL:
